We are just two weeks from Thanksgiving and the kickoff of the holiday season here in Des Plaines, and I couldn’t be more excited. This time of year is special as we gather with family and friends, enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal, express our gratitude for what we have, and find ways to give back to others with our time or resources.
Next week, we have our regularly scheduled City Council meeting on Monday. Our agenda includes a resolution to pass the budget for next year. This is a budget I am very proud of, and our community should be proud of as well. In addition to not asking our residents or businesses for any additional property tax money, we are making significant infrastructure improvements, including finishing the complete renovation and expansion of our 50-year-old police station, planning the design and replacement of Des Plaines’ oldest Fire Station, station 63, which was built in the 1950s, and making significant investments into our streets and sewer systems. In addition to our regularly scheduled City Council meeting on Monday, we have a special City Council meeting on Wednesday, November 20, at 6 PM in the City Council Chambers. This meeting will feature a presentation, public comment, and information relating to the City’s Downtown Economic Development Strategic Plan.
As we quickly head into December, we have two great City events lined up. First, on Friday, December 6, the City is hosting our annual holiday tree lighting at Metropolitan Square. We’ll have live entertainment, food trucks, and community tables starting at 4:00 PM. We expect a special arrival from Santa at 4:45 PM, and the tree lighting is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
On Saturday, December 7, the City is hosting our Winter Fair and Trolley Tours. You can shop through an indoor artisan market featuring local artists and hop on a trolley to experience a historic tour of the City with the Des Plaines History Center as your guide. This event is scheduled from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM at the Des Plaines Public Library. Although the trolly tours have just filled up, there is a waitlist on the city website.
