Message from Mayor Goczkowski

Tomorrow is Halloween, and I look forward to seeing local trick-or-treaters throughout Des Plaines.  Please ensure that you and your family are practicing safe trick-or-treating, including using the community's sidewalks whenever possible and ensuring that you have bright-colored clothing and/or a flashlight as it gets dark out. This month, the City Council held budget meetings to review our Fiscal Year 2025 Des Plaines City Budget. This year's budget builds on our fiscally responsible approach in Des Plaines. While nearly every other unit of government is raising their tax levies, Des Plaines is not, which means we are not asking residents or businesses for additional money this year. You can review the budget here. As leaves are falling all over the City, please remember that the City of Des Plaines has a fantastic curbside leaf collection program. To participate, leaves need to be raked into the street by 6 a.m. on the scheduled pick-up date. Please be careful to keep storm drains clear. We encourage residents to position their leaves into one neat, continuous row, one foot from the curb. To find out more info on leaf collection, click here. Lastly, Access Point, the City’s bi-annual magazine, was mailed to residents throughout the City earlier this month. You can also view a digital copy in English, Español, and Polski. City Council Preview

City Offices Closed

City offices are closed on Monday, November 11, for the Veterans Day holiday. Refuse collection will follow its regular schedule.

Early Voting Through November 4

The 2024 Presidential Election is almost here! Early voting is available at the Des Plaines Public Library through November 4, and at various locations throughout suburban Cook County. Can’t make it to the polls? Mail-in voting is available as well. Learn more and register to vote at cookcountyclerkil.gov/elections.

Please note that the Des Plaines Public Library is NOT an Election Day polling place on November 5.

The Fall 2024 issue of our print newsletter, Access Point, just arrived in mailboxes. A digital version is available at desplainesil.gov/accesspoint along with Spanish and Polish translations.

Halloween in Des Plaines

The City of Des Plaines does not have designated hours for trick-or-treating on October 31. Those homes interested in welcoming trick-or-treaters are asked to turn on porch or outdoor lights. Those who are not interested are asked to keep outdoor lights off. The City also has flyers available online to let your neighbors know if you are participating. Visit desplainesil.gov/halloween.

Pumpkin Smash

Looking for a sustainable and fun way to dispose of your pumpkin after Halloween? Community members are encouraged to bring their pumpkins, jack-o’-lanterns, and gourds to the Des Plaines Pumpkin Smash composting event on Saturday, November 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Prairie Lakes Fitness Center North Parking Lot, 515 E. Thacker St., Des Plaines.

Co-hosted by the City of Des Plaines and the Des Plaines Park District, this event allows attendees to toss their pumpkins into the designated dumpster, and WasteNot Compost will haul them away for composting. Painted pumpkins are fine, but please remove any non-biodegradable materials like candles, googly eyes, stickers, plastic, and yarn.

Please don’t put your pumpkin in the trash; bring it to the smash and green your Halloween!

Save the Dates for Winter Celebrations!

The City of Des Plaines is planning a festive kick-off to the holiday season in Metropolitan Square on Friday, December 6, with the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. On Saturday, December 7, join us at the Des Plaines Public Library for the Winter Fair artisan market and historical trolley tours of Des Plaines with the Des Plaines History Center (registration required and opens Nov. 1).
