Harvest Hoot - This Weekend!
Saturday, Oct. 19 | Noon to 4 p.m. at Oakton College
Shop from over 25 vendors at the artisan market, explore the inflatable corn maze, grab a snack from one of the food vendors, enjoy live entertainment on stage, meet birds of prey, and check out the family activities! Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

Pumpkin Smash
Saturday, Nov. 2 | 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Prairie Lakes Community Center's North Parking Lot
Don't put it in the trash; bring it to the smash! Green your Halloween and bring your pumpkins, jack-o'-lanterns, and gourds to the Pumpkin Smash composting event.
Attendees can toss their pumpkins into the designated dumpster and WasteNot Compost will haul it away for composting. Painted pumpkins will be accepted, but please remove any non-biodegradable materials such as candles, googly eyes, stickers, plastic, and yarn.

Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony
Friday, Dec. 6 | 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Metropolitan Square
Join us for live entertainment and a special appearance by Santa and the Grinch. Admire the trees decorated by local community groups, and don’t forget to drop off your letter to the North Pole at our mailbox! Tree Lighting will take place at 6:30 p.m.
Featured fun and entertainment:
- Snap a photo with Santa (and the Grinch!)
- Live performances on stage beginning at 4:30 p.m.
- Name a Snowplow Contest
- Community tables and hot chocolate
- Food trucks (food available for purchase)
- Drop off your letter at Santa’s mailbox
Winter Fair and Trolley Tours - New Location!
Saturday, Dec. 7 | 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Des Plaines Public Library
Shop your way through the indoor artisan market featuring local makers and hop on a trolley to experience a historical tour of the City with the Des Plaines History Center as your guide. The trolleys depart from the Des Plaines Public Library (new location!). You’ll have an additional chance to post your letter to the North Pole at our mailbox and submit an entry for the Name a Snowplow Contest!
Advance registration for the trolley tour is required. Registration will open on Friday, Nov. 1. More details will be available at desplainesil.gov/holidaylighting soon.
Des Plaines Youth Commission's Holiday Hoopla
Saturday, Dec. 14 | 1 to 3 p.m. at Des Plaines Public Library
The Des Plaines Youth Commission presents its annual holiday event for children, the 2024 Holiday Hoopla. Visit with Santa Claus and enjoy crafts, games, cookies, juice and holiday cheer! The event will be held at the Des Plaines Public Library in Meeting Room C. Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. Registration is not required. Children must arrive by 2:30 p.m. to visit with Santa.
Participants are encouraged to bring a non-perishable item for the Self Help Closet and Pantry.
