Message from Mayor Goczkowski

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us for this year’s Food Truck Round Up series. We had an amazing turnout of community members who came together to enjoy live music, support local artisans, and savor a fantastic variety of cuisine. I’d also like to highlight the success of last month’s Fire Department Open House, where families explored fire trucks, met our dedicated firefighters, and learned vital fire safety tips.

Lastly, this past Saturday, I was thrilled to participate in the 9th Annual Community Bike Ride with Bike Walk Des Plaines in Partnership with the City. It was inspiring seeing so many residents participate in this event, promoting a healthier lifestyle and an appreciation for the great outdoors. Events like this strengthen our sense of community and celebrate the vibrant spirit that makes Des Plaines a special place to call home.

As we near the end of this fiscal year, I am excited to share with you the proposed 2025 budget, a comprehensive plan that will guide our initiatives and priorities in the year ahead. This year’s budget represents the collective effort, foresight, and commitment of your dedicated city officials and staff, who have worked to ensure that our community not only overcomes challenges but also seizes opportunities for growth and improvement.

I invite you to join us in this important process by attending our special budget review meetings. These will occur at 6 p.m. on October 10 and 16 and, if needed, on October 24. Your input is invaluable in shaping the decisions to help set the course for our City's future.

City Council Preview

City Council will meet on Monday, October 7, at 7 p.m. For more details, visit the City's website here and watch the livestream here.

City Offices Closed

City offices are closed on Monday, October 14, for the Columbus Day holiday. Refuse collection will follow its regular schedule.

Police Department Lobby Temporary Relocation

Due to ongoing building renovations, the Police Department's front desk is currently closed. If you need police assistance, enter the Des Plaines Municipal Complex and follow the signs. You'll find an intercom system on the wall connecting directly to the Police Department. The Police Department will respond to your call and meet to assist you. Thank you for your understanding as we work to improve our facilities.

Harvest Hoot Event

Celebrate fall with us at Harvest Hoot on Saturday, October 19, from noon to 4 p.m. at Oakton College! Enjoy live entertainment, explore a fun inflatable corn maze, watch a live pumpkin carving demonstration, and participate in various family-friendly activities. Stroll through our harvest artisan market with over 25 unique vendors and grab a bite from one of the many food trucks. This is a can't-miss event for the whole community, and we can't wait to see you there! Visit desplainesil.gov/harvesthoot for more information.

Curbside Leaf Collection

The City's collection (separate from the LRS weekly pick-up) begins October 21. Leaves must be raked by 6 a.m. on the scheduled pick-up date. The leaf pick-up zone numbers are the same as the refuse pick-up. Please position the leaves into one neat, continuous row, one foot (12") from the curb. (Grass, branches, brush, rocks, and other debris will not be collected). Watch this video and visit desplainesil.gov/leafcollection for more details.

DEA Drug Take Back Event

The Des Plaines Police Department is hosting a free Drug Take-Back Event on Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Des Plaines Municipal Complex lobby as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

Halloween in Des Plaines

The City of Des Plaines does not have designated hours for trick-or-treating on Oct. 31. Those homes interested in welcoming trick-or-treaters are asked to turn on porch or outdoor lights. Those who are not interested are asked to keep outdoor lights off. The City also has flyers available online to let your neighbors know if you are participating. Visit desplainesil.gov/halloween.
