 Message from Mayor Goczkowski
As we wind down another wonderful summer in Des Plaines, it’s time to look forward to the new school year. I want to remind everyone to be extra mindful of pedestrians and students walking to school. Safety is our top priority.
While shopping for school supplies, please consider picking up an extra pack of crayons, markers, or other supplies to donate to your student’s classroom. Or check out the opportunities to help local students in need through the Self Help Closet and Pantry of Des Plaines – Community Backpack project. Your generosity can make a big difference for families in our community who may need extra help.
Remember to join us on Aug. 20 for the Food Truck Round Up at Library Plaza to kick off the school year with some delicious food and community fun.
I wish all our students and education professionals the best as we head back to school!

Domain Change
We’ve updated our website and email domains. This transition is crucial in enhancing cyber security, ensuring the safety of our data, and maintaining the trust of our community.
Our new website address is now desplainesil.gov and City email addresses now end in @desplainesil.gov. All web links and email addresses should redirect or forward to their new destinations, but we recommend that you update your address book and bookmarks accordingly.
Back to School Safety
Back-to-school season is just around the corner. Illegal school bus passing poses a significant threat to children and others on the road. You can help keep our students safe as they board the bus for school by adhering to regulations for school bus flashing lights.
In every state, it is illegal for you to pass a school bus while the stop-arm is extended and the red lights are flashing.
-
Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. You should slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle.
-
Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. You must stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before you start driving again.
