 Message from Mayor Goczkowski
Last week, we learned that our City Manager, Michael G. Bartholomew, has decided to retire after 13 years of service to the City. While this is a moment of change, it is also an opportunity to express our appreciation for Mike's contributions.
Mike has played a significant role in the growth and progress of the City of Des Plaines. Over the last decade, his leadership has been crucial in navigating challenges and achieving milestones. Thanks to Mike's work with the City Council and our leadership team, our city is well-positioned for future success.
The process of selecting a new City Manager is underway, and we are confident that our next City Manager will continue our forward momentum.
We wish Mike well in his retirement, and we hope this next chapter brings him fulfillment and joy.

City Council Recap
City Council met on Tuesday, January 16 at 7 p.m. Here are a few noteworthy items from the agenda:
-
City Council voted to approve an ordinance amending the City Code to address the rising number of buses in the Chicagoland region making unscheduled stops to discharge passengers. This ordinance requires bus operators to request approval from the City prior to any stops to ensure they have adequate plans to safely get the passengers to their final destination.
-
Council approved several interlocal agreements with the Frisbie Senior Center and the Des Plaines History Center to provide financial support for the programs that they provide to the community.

Snow Removal
During winter weather, home and business owners should clear sidewalks, fire hydrants (clear 3-feet around), and any handicap-accessible parking spaces on their property. This keeps travel safe for our community and will help you avoid being fined. For more information, visit desplaines.org/snowremoval.
Prevent Frozen Pipes
Winter has hit the Midwest! During these cold periods, water freezes and expands in pipes, which can cause them to burst or freeze. As the weather warms up and pipes begin to thaw, the water stuck behind the freeze can cause the pressure inside the pipe to further increase, which can also lead to pipe bursts. Here are some ways to prevent and manage frozen pipes:
-
Prevent freezes by running cold water in your sinks and leaving cabinets with pipes open.
-
If possible, thaw frozen pipes using an electric hair dryer on a low setting.
- Never use an open flame to defrost pipes.
-
If your pipes break, shut off your water and water heater and call a plumber.
