 Message from Mayor Goczkowski
As we embrace the spirit of the holiday season, I want to extend my warmest wishes to the residents of Des Plaines. Your participation in our winter celebrations at the beginning of December made our city shine brightly with joy and community spirit.
I'd also like to express my gratitude to my dedicated colleagues on the City Council and the hardworking City staff for their commitment throughout 2023. Your dedication and efforts have truly made a difference in the lives of our residents.
As we approach the end of this year, join me in reflecting on our accomplishments and looking forward to the promising opportunities that await us in 2024. Together, let us strive for continued progress, unity, and prosperity for the City of Des Plaines.
As always, feel free to contact me directly at agoczkowski@desplaines.org or 847-391-5301. Please share this E-News with your family, friends and neighbors and encourage them to subscribe.

City Council Preview
Council will meet on Monday, Dec. 18. Here are some noteworthy items on the agenda:
- The owner of 2150 Oxford Road is requesting renewal of a Cook County Property Tax Class 6b incentive. Class 6b incentives are intended to encourage industrial investment by reducing the assessment level of eligible properties for 12 years.
Holiday Decorating Safety Tips
It’s fun to decorate for the winter holidays, but holiday decorations can increase the risk of a home fire. As you deck the halls this season, be fire smart.
- Inspect holiday lights each year before you put them up. Throw away light strands with frayed or pinched wires.
- Water your Christmas tree every day. A dry tree is dangerous because it can catch on fire easily.
- Consider using battery-operated flameless candles, which can look, smell and feel like real candles.
- If you do use lit candles, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be knocked down easily.
The City wishes everyone a happy holiday season!
City offices are closed on Dec. 25 for the Christmas holiday and Jan. 1 for New Year's Day. Refuse collection will be delayed one day each week for the holiday. Please note that the City Council meeting scheduled for January 2, 2024, has been canceled.
Recycle Your Holiday Tree
Public Works and Engineering is collecting holiday trees throughout the City, weather permitting, starting Tuesday, January 2, 2024, through Friday, January 5, 2024. Bare holiday trees (no decorations, lights, tinsel or plastic bags) should be left at the curbside before 7 a.m. on January 2.
If you miss this opportunity and you’re an LRS customer, they will pick up trees through Friday, January 12, weather permitting. After this time, any bare holiday trees will need to be disposed of in April when landscape waste pick-up begins. Trees frozen to the ground cannot be picked up.
