City Council Recap
Council met on Monday, Nov. 6. Here were some noteworthy items on the agenda:
-
Proclamations recognizing Veterans Day and National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
- City Council approved the 2023 Proposed Property Tax Levy resolution and Public Notice for a hearing. Since the 2023 estimated aggregate levy is below the 5% of the 2022 property tax extension (-0.58% decrease), the City is not required to publish a legal notice and hold a public hearing. However, for transparency purposes, a public hearing will be held at the Nov. 20 meeting to provide the City Council with increased flexibility in determining the 2023 property tax levy amount and more opportunity for public input.
-
City Council voted to approve the proposed amendments to the Board of Fire & Police Commission Rules & Regulations that were deferred from the Oct. 2, 2023, meeting.
-
The City Council approved the performance security reduction and the public improvements submitted by the developer of 1425 Ellinwood, the Welkin.
Des Plaines Fire Department Puts New Equipment Into Service
Last month, the DPFD unveiled Tower 61 and Ambulance 61. These brand-new vehicles are state-of-the-art! They contain updated features and technology, replacing the old Tower and Ambulance. These vehicles will help us continue to respond efficiently to emergencies, keeping our city safe. Check out this time-lapse video of Tower 61 during its construction.
Free Narcan Dispenser Unveiled
We recently installed a Narcan (Naloxone) dispenser at our police department. Made possible through a collaborative partnership with the Kenneth Young Center, the Narcan dispenser offers access to Narcan and Fentanyl testing strips. The dispenser is now available to the public in the Des Plaines Police Department lobby (1418 Miner St.) 24/7, free of charge, and no questions asked.
DPPD is committed to combatting the opioid crisis and reducing the number of overdose fatalities. Learn more about Narcan.
City of Des Plaines Social Worker Danek, Alderman Sayad (Ward 4), Mayor Goczkowski, Daryl Pass from the Kenneth Young Center, Chief Anderson, and Social Worker Poklop attend the Narcan dispenser installation.
Winter Celebrations!
The City of Des Plaines is planning a festive kick-off to the holiday season in Metropolitan Square. Join us for the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, Dec. 1., and the Winter Fair in the Square on Saturday, Dec. 2! See the full schedule of events and learn more at desplaines.org/holidaylighting.
Pumpkin Smash a Smashing Success
The first Pumpkin Smash event, co-hosted by the City of Des Plaines and the Des Plaines Park District, was a success! Attendees tossed their pumpkins into a designated "smash dumpster," and WasteNot Compost efficiently composted 3,648 pounds of pumpkin waste. By using WasteNot's electric vehicles to divert food scraps from the landfill, we offset 163 gallons of gasoline, significantly reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner, greener environment. These composting efforts are equivalent to not driving around 3,618 miles, highlighting our community's dedication to sustainability and waste reduction. Thank you, participants!
Welcome Foxtail on the Lake
Last week, we officially welcomed Foxtail on the Lake to our business community! City Officials, members of the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce and representatives of the Des Plaines Park District came together for a ribbon cutting to celebrate. The City is proud to support this new restaurant via our tax incentive program and a Business Assistance Grant. Be sure to check out this innovative eatery at Lake Park!
