 Message from Mayor Goczkowski
Earlier this week, we gathered as a community to commemorate Patriot Day, a solemn occasion that reminds us of the tragic events that unfolded on September 11, 2001. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and unity that define our great nation.
Together with our Police and Fire Departments, we paid tribute to the heroes who bravely responded to the attacks, as well as the individuals whose lives were forever changed by the events of 9/11. We reflected on the enduring spirit of unity and compassion that emerged from the tragedy, and we reaffirmed our commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive community here in Des Plaines.
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated first responders, city officials and community members for coming together to ensure that the memory of 9/11 lives on and that the legacy of unity continues to inspire us.

Community Bike Ride– Hosted by Bike Walk Des Plaines. Sept. 23 at Camp Ground Road Woods at the Cook County Forest Preserve.
Siren Testing & Maintenance
Testing and regular siren maintenance will take place on September 13 and 14. As a result, residents of Des Plaines and the surrounding areas may hear periodic alarms.
Water Service Line Indentification
As part of a state and federal law, the City is required to develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive water service line material inventory and replacement plan. We need your help! If you haven't yet done so, we're asking residents to test their pipes to identify the material of the pipe serving homes or businesses.
Go to desplaines.org/pipesurvey to learn how to identify and report the material of your pipes. Need help? Call Public Works at 847-391-5464.
Rail Safety Week – Sept. 18-24
When walking, jogging or riding through railroad crossings, it’s important to know what to do when you see railroad signs and signals. Stay alert at places where the roadway crosses train tracks. Together, we can #STOPTrackTragedies.
-
Always expect a train. Trains are quieter and faster than you think, can run on any track, at any time, from either direction and do not run on schedules.
-
The only safe place to cross tracks is at designated public crossings with a crossbuck, flashing red lights or a gate.
-
Never pass flashing lights or go around lowered gates. Always wait until lights have stopped flashing and gates are completely raised.
Save the Date – Harvest Hoot
