Water Main Repairs
Des Plaines has been facing a higher-than-average number of water main breaks this summer. There are a few reasons for this. The pipes and systems carrying water to homes and businesses are getting older and more prone to breaking. Also, unusually wet or dry conditions cause soil to shift, putting pressure on underground pipes.
Despite these challenges, the hardworking Public Works team is dedicated to fixing the issues as quickly as possible. They're working around the clock to restore regular water supply to everyone in the community.
Common signs of a water main break include pooling water, a sudden decrease in water pressure, discolored water coming from the tap or sinkholes or cracks in the road, sidewalk, or pavement. If you notice any of these signs, please contact our Public Works Department at 847-391-5464.
The City Council will be discussing the aging infrastructure to find ways to improve the systems for reliable water service.
Watering Reminder
Water restrictions began on May 15 and will continue through Sept. 15. Until then, please adhere to the City's guidelines for watering to conserve our water supply. Watering hours are between 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Even numbered addresses may water on even-numbered calendar days.
Odd number addresses may water on odd-numbered calendar days.
Please Note: Restrictions may be waived for new plantings that require more watering after initial installation (such as sod, trees and bushes). Please contact the Public Works Department at 847-391-5464 for more information.
Graceland Avenue Closed at Rail Crossing
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that repairs by the Union Pacific Railroad to a crossing on Graceland Avenue (U.S. 12/45), between Northwest Highway/Miner Street (U.S. 14) and Ellinwood Street, in Des Plaines, will require a full closure which began at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 14. The City of Des Plaines has coordinated with IDOT and Union Pacific to construct a new water main under the tracks at the same time to maximize efficiency and limit the inconvenience for motorists.
A posted detour directs motorists to Northwest Highway, Broadway Street, Golf Road (Illinois 58), Wolf Road, and Oakton Street. The work is expected to be completed by Aug. 31, weather permitting.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to detour signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, and be alert for workers and equipment.

Back to School Driving Safety
As the back-to-school season approaches, we urge you to be cautious driving around school zones and bus stops. Slow down, obey speed limits and remain vigilant, especially in areas with high foot traffic. By reducing your speed, you're giving yourself more time to react to unexpected situations and helping to create a more secure environment for students and pedestrians. #SlowDownDesPlaines
