City Council Preview
Council will meet on Monday, March 20 at 7 p.m. Here are some noteworthy items on the agenda:
- A discussion about the Algonquin Road Grade Separation Project. The project proposes an overpass over the Union Pacific Railroad between Mt. Prospect Rd. and Wolf Rd. This ambitious project will take some time to construct and will impact nearby facilities.
- The City’s Municipal Code was amended in 2019 to create a three-year pilot program to allow residents to keep hens under specific regulations. The pilot program is set to expire on April 30, 2023, and the City Council has the opportunity to determine how the program will continue. Approval of the proposed ordinance would update the City Code to convert the pilot program into a permanent program to allow the keeping of chicken hens under certain regulations. The amendments also propose edits to some of the existing rules, such as allowing a maximum of six hens instead of four.
- Consideration of a resolution in support of a Cook County class 6b tax incentive for the property located at 55 Howard Avenue.

Highlander Transportation Takes Important First Development Step
A demolition permit was issued for the former Ozinga Concrete Manufacturing (Meyer Material) facility on March 13, 2023. Highlander Transportation plans to build an approximately 60,000-square-foot distribution facility to serve as its new home at 580 S. Wolf Rd. The contractors believe that they can begin the demolition by Monday. The City has relayed to the contractors that all elements to be demolished on the site must be wet prior to their demolition to mitigate the dust and debris. Once the demolition begins, the contractor estimates it will take 60 days to demolish all the buildings and structures on the property.
We’ve provided a photo of the expected structure demolition sequence. Demolition will be starting on the north end of the property and move south as the process continues.
The City will follow up with another update once permits for sitework and building construction are issued.
Understanding your Flood Risk
Learn about your flood risk by reviewing FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). If you think your property is located within a regulatory floodplain, floodway or an area with known flooding, the City of Des Plaines Engineering Division can review the FIRM for you and assess your risk.
Go to desplaines.org/floodplainrequest to request a free floodplain determination letter for any property within the City. If you feel that your home has been incorrectly mapped within FEMA’s regulatory floodplain, contact the Engineering Division at 847-391-5390.
