City Council Preview
Council will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Here are some noteworthy items on the agenda:
- The Council will be considering several agreements with the Frisbie Senior Center. Since 2014, the City has been partnering with the Senior Center to administer several programs. Partnerships like this one efficiently connect Des Plaines’ seniors with the resources they need.
- The City Council will discuss a resolution proposing to re-establish a downtown restaurant grant program. City Council is prioritizing the recruitment and cultivation of new restaurants within walking distance of the Des Plaines Theatre, the downtown Metra station, and our new developments. This program would provide up to $100,000 for new restaurants locating in our downtown. (Council will approve anything over $10,000.) These grants will help us to achieve our vision for the downtown district.
- Additionally, the Council will consider ordinances authorizing the acquisition of two downtown properties through the condemnation process. The City has attempted to engage the owners in sales prior to this step with no success. The City intends to make a best and final offer in an effort to purchase the properties. The ordinances being considered would authorize acquisition of the properties through eminent domain if the final offer is rejected. Both properties have been vacant for many years and would be assets to our downtown revitalization.
Council will meet on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. Read the agenda here for more details. And, watch the livestream here.
