City Council Preview
Council will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Here are some noteworthy items on the agenda:
- At the Dec. 19 meeting, the City Council deferred a vote on the first reading of approving Ordinance Z-39-22 (re: a proposed hotel at 1700 Higgins) to allow time for staff to further research parking requirements in other communities in the O'Hare area. Staff have provided additional input for Council's consideration at the Jan. 3 meeting.
- On Nov. 8, 2022, Des Plaines voters rejected a ballot measure to eliminate term limits for Des Plaines elected officials other than the Mayor. The City Council will consider another ballot question for voters regarding how those term limits should work, and whether these term limits should apply both consecutively and non-consecutively.
- The Council will review a formal request from a local veteran's organization for support of a Korean War Memorial to be hosted in Des Plaines in Summer of 2023.
Council will meet on Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. Read the agenda here for more details. And, watch the livestream here.
Safe Driving
With the holidays in full swing, the DPPD reminds the community about the dangers of impaired driving. Remember these tips as you plan for celebrations:
- Designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride-sharing service to get home safely.
- If you see an impaired driver on the road, pull over and dial 9-1-1.
- Have a friend or family member who is about to drive impaired? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get them home safely—they’ll thank you later.
- Always buckle up!
Updated Illinois Smoke Alarm Law
On January 1, 2023, any new smoke alarm being installed within a single or multi-family home is required to be an alarm that features a 10-year sealed battery. This excludes homes built after 1988 that already have hardwired smoke alarms, and homes with wireless integrated alarms that use low-power radio frequency communications, Wi-Fi, or other Wireless Local Area Networking capability.

The City wishes all of you a happy new year!
