City Council Recap
Council met on Aug. 15. Here are some noteworthy discussion items from the meeting:
- Discussion and approval of a resolution supporting and consenting to a 6b application for a new distribution center at 580 S. Wolf Road. 6b incentives help to facilitate industrial redevelopment or re-occupancy of vacant buildings and sites.
- Discussion of a resolution authorizing the submission of a public question asking whether term limits for all elected officials should be eliminated on the November 8, 2022 election ballot, or at the next available election permitted by election law. After discussion, the resolution was amended and adopted to authorize the submission of a public question asking whether term limits for all the Alderman and the City Clerk should be eliminated.
The next Council Meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Read the agenda here for more details. And, watch the livestream here.
Des Plaines Police: Be Aware of Ruse Burglaries
Reports of ruse burglaries and attempts have been circulating the town. These individuals will typically knock on your door posing as a utility or home repair worker and either try to invite themselves in or get you to come outside while a second person enters your home, otherwise known as a "ruse". Please call 9-1-1 immediately if you see any suspicious people or vehicles in your neighborhood.

Back to School Driving Safety
You’re likely to see more buses and pedestrians out and about now that school is back in session. As you’re driving through Des Plaines (and other communities) please be alert for students on their way to and from school. Please follow these practices:
- When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school.
- When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for increased presence of children.
- Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood.
- Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops.
- Learn and obey the school bus laws and the "flashing signal light system" that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions:
- Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles.
- Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again.
Rescue 63 Put into Service
The Des Plaines Fire Department officially put Rescue 63 into service last week. Rescue 63 is a multi-purpose vehicle that will be utilized for both EMS and fire responses. It operates out of Station 63 on Thacker Street. Essentially this is a heavy duty pick up truck, that is outfitted with EMS equipment and an assortment of equipment to handle a variety of calls. The priority of this vehicle is to be used as a support vehicle and to keep other companies available for service or more severe emergencies. Rescue 63 is the final piece to the operational modifications made throughout the Fire Department to make service more effective and efficient.
Cop on a Rooftop
The Des Plaines Police Department participated in ‘Cop on a Rooftop’ last Friday, Aug. 19. DPPD were at two Des Plaines locations supporting the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois. Thanks to the generous support of our neighbors, they collected over $4,000! Donors were gifted Special Olympics merchandise and a free donut. What a delicious way to support the athletes of Special Olympics Illinois! 🍩
