City Council Update
On the Agenda: August 1
Council will meet on Monday. Here are some noteworthy items on the agenda:
- Unfinished business includes the second reading of the zoning map amendment regarding the property of 622 Graceland-1368 Webford and 1332 Webford. Approval of the zoning change request is required by the City Council to move forward with this project. Additionally, the Council will also consider the sale of 1332 Webford, a transaction which is required for the project as designed. Petitioner updates or meeting packet materials can be accessed at desplaines.org/gracelandwebford.
- Awards will be given to two Des Plaines police officers and a citizen for displaying heroic actions in life threatening situations.
- Through the years, staff has received multiple requests for temporary classrooms at public and private schools throughout the City. The current City Code does not allow for their use. To provide a reasonable allowance to the City’s partner schools and institutions, staff proposes to amend the Zoning Ordinance to establish a clear allowance, with restrictions. A public hearing will be convened at the City Council meeting to discuss amending the Zoning Ordinance.

Donation Requests
As our students prepare to go back to school, our friends over at the Self Help Closet and Pantry are busy gearing up to support the Community Backpack Project. Elementary students in District 62 who are in need can take home a backpack full of food to last through the weekend. Community donations are appreciated!
The food pantry is also requesting donations of school supplies to support our students who'll be returning to the classroom very soon. For information about current donation needs and drop off hours, visit selfhelppantry.org.

988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), and is now active across the United States.
When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.
The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always remain available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.
Expiration Dates Extended
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that expiration dates for driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits are being extended until December 1, 2022. The previous extension was set to end on July 31, 2022. As a result, expired driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permits will remain valid until December 1, 2022, so customers do not need to rush into Driver Services facilities. This extension does not apply to commercial driver’s licenses (CDL) and CDL learner’s permits.
