City Council Update
On the Agenda: May 2
Council will meet on Monday. Here are some noteworthy items on the agenda:
- Proclamations recognizing Public Service Recognition Week, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month.
- Continued discussion of Metropolitan Square redesign and improvements.
- Based on the 2020 Census, the population of the City increased from 58,364 to 60,267. In order to comply with constitutional requirements, the City is required to adjust the boundaries of the City’s eight wards so that each ward is nearly equal in population and as compact and contiguous as practicable. The Council will discuss a proposed new ward map and corresponding City Code amendments.

Update on Public Hearing for Proposed Graceland-Webford Redevelopment
The City and Planning and Zoning Board (PZB) have received a request from the Petitioner to continue the public hearing for the proposed Graceland-Webford mixed-use development to Tuesday, May 24, 7 p.m. in Room 102 of City Hall at 1420 Miner Street, Des Plaines IL, 60016. The petitioner, who has proposed a development consisting of 131 residential units in combination with a restaurant-lounge and parking, intends to make design changes based on input received.
While the item will be placed on the Board’s May 10 meeting agenda, which is open to the public as all PZB meetings are, the petitioner is not planning to attend, and there will be no new petitioner or staff material to review on May 10. The City expects all substantive discussion, presentation, and Board consideration to occur on Tuesday, May 24.

Public Works Branch Collection
In addition to the yard waste collection provided LRS from April-November, Public Works provides supplemental branch collection. Get the collection schedule on the April page of our Community Calendar desplaines.org/annualcalendar. A few helpful tips:
- Place branches on the parkway by 7 a.m. on collection day. It may take up to 2 weeks to collect each zone. If branches are placed out late, incorrectly, or cannot be reached, collection will not be attempted again until the next month.
- Do not obstruct sidewalks or streets.
- Branches should be 2 feet or longer, cleanly cut (without roots), and smaller than six inches in diameter, with cut ends pointing to the curb.
Bring Your Unused or Expired Rx Drugs to the Des Plaines Police Department
The Des Plaines Police Department is hosting a free Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That's dangerous and often tragic. Take this opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinet and turn in your prescription drugs safely and anonymously.
