Message from Mayor Andrew Goczkowski

Earlier today, I had the pleasure of joining hundreds of business representatives and chamber members, local elected officials and stakeholders at the Mayor's Annual Address to Business & Community Enhancement Awards sponsored by the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The event was held at our magnificent downtown theatre.

It was so exciting to be with everyone in person! In my address, I shared that the state of our city is strong and thriving. There is major progress and exciting things happening in Des Plaines, as we highlighted in this video.  And, I underscored that THEY, along with YOU, our residents, are “CO-INVESTORS” in this special and extraordinary community that we share. We will be posting my entire speech to Channel 17 soon and you can also watch a clip on our You Tube channel.

One of my top priorities (and the City Council’s) is to build a bridge on Algonquin Road over the UP railroad tracks. I recently produced a video spotlighting this project. You can check it out here.  

I hope you’re enjoying the spring temperatures and I encourage you to get out and about—catch a show at the Des Plaines Theatre, grab lunch or dinner at one of our many restaurants, shop local, go for a walk on the Des Plaines River Trail or visit one of our beautiful parks. There truly is so much to do and discover in Des Plaines!

Council will meet on Monday. Here are some noteworthy items on agenda:

• Amending the text of the Des Plaines Zoning Ordinance Regarding Public Notice and Recovery of City Costs and Fees
• Discussion of Sidewalk Snow Removal

Don’t Toss that Plastic Bag – Put Plastic in its Place!

Did you know that plastic bags don’t biodegrade, meaning it will take hundreds of years for them to decompose in a landfill? Properly recycling bags also prevents unsightly litter and hazards to wildlife.

Plastic bags CANNOT be recycled in your regular pickup (because bags can harm machinery used in the hauling/sorting process). But, you can bring them to places to be recycled! Clean Up - Give Back is hosting a community-wide plastic bag drive. You can drop off your plastic bags at these locations throughout the month of April: 

• City Hall Lobby
• Frisbie Senior Center
• Des Plaines Public Library
• The Center of Concern
• Des Plaines Chapter - Izaak Walton League of America
• Uncork, Unwind

An upcycled community bench will be created from the plastic that is collected. For more information, please visit cleanupgiveback.org.
