City Council Update
On the Agenda: Feb. 22
Here are some noteworthy items on the Feb. 22 (Tuesday) City Council agenda:
- Public hearing to consider zoning amendments that would allow and regulate full-service restaurants in institutional districts. This item is being driven by the Des Plaines Park District’s plan to remodel Lakeview Center at 1177 Howard (Lake Park/Lake Opeka area, former Good Shepherd Lutheran Church) to include a restaurant.
- Discussion of sidewalk snow removal in commercially zoned areas.

Des Plaines Fire Department Hiring 10 Firefighters/Paramedics
DPFD is recruiting – and this opportunity only happens every few years. We plan to hire 10 people immediately (upon posting the Final Eligibility List in late April).
DPFD is a progressive, high-caliber department, led by a chief with 32 + years of experience and newly promoted deputy chiefs. There is tremendous opportunity for candidates to rise through the ranks, grow professionally and shape the department’s future. If you’re in the fire service or know someone who may be interested, please visit desplaines.org/dpfdjobs.
Illinois and Cook County Likely to Lift Mask Mandate
COVID-19 case counts are down throughout suburban Cook County and across the state. As long as that trend continues, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker plans to lift the indoor mask mandate for most public places on Feb. 28. Cook County public health officials have stated that its masking order for suburban Cook County will also be lifted consistent with the Governor’s time frame.
Des Plaines’ cases are trending with Cook County – look at that drop! And, more than 90% of our residents have received at least one vaccine dose and 71% have had their shots and boosters. Nice work on doing your part to keep yourself, your family and your community safe and healthy!
