City Council Update
At the Oct. 4 Meeting, Council approved the “Halston Market” development proposal – which includes 125 townhouse units on 11 acres near the Oakton Corridor. Council approved a revised proposal from the developer, which includes additional parking and a taller fence on the north side of the development.
City Council will meet on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
On the agenda:
- A Resolution adopting a Climate Action Plan for the Chicago Region. This plan is one of the first regional climate plans in the United States. It engages stakeholders in setting targets and developing strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to develop resiliency to climate change impacts. Climate change is an urgent threat facing local governments, the economy, community safety and individual well-being. Regional collaboration is key because the issues that are affecting the climate (such as transportation) cross municipal boundaries and require more resources than individual communities have on their own.
- A Resolution approving the City of Des Plaines as a Member Municipality of the Greenest Region Compact, which leverages the strength of municipal government to build vibrant, sustainable communities across the Chicago region. The Compact’s goals guide municipal action and foster collaboration that has positive impacts on sustainability in the region.
The agenda is posted here. Watch meeting live.
Curbside Leaf Collection Starts Monday
The City's collection (separate from the LRS weekly pick-up) begins Oct. 18. Leaves need to be raked by 6 a.m. on the scheduled pick-up date. The leaf pick-up zone numbers are the same as the refuse pick up. Please position the leaves into one neat, continuous row, one foot (12") from the curb. (Grass, branches, brush, rocks and other debris will not be collected).
Planning for a Fa-boo-Lous Halloween
As a reminder, the City of Des Plaines does not have designated hours for trick-or-treating on Halloween. If you want to let trick or treaters know you are participating, or let them know you’re NOT participating this year, simply download, print and post one of these flyers.

Bring Your Unused or Expired Rx Drugs to the Des Plaines Police Department
The Des Plaines Police Department is hosting a free Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That's dangerous and often tragic. Take this opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinet and turn in your prescription drugs safely and anonymously.
Maine Township Tax Appeal Workshop
Commissioner Michael M. Cabonargi of the Cook County Board of Review will be hosting a tax appeal workshop at the Des Plaines Public Library on Thu. Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. Learn how your property taxes are assessed and how you can appeal. Attendees can file a paper appeal at the workshop and will have the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session.
