Message from Your Mayor

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Community Garage Sale this past weekend. We had well over 100 registrants that appeared on our interactive map. We hope it was a successful event for both homeowners wanting to sell items, and shoppers.
Council will meet a few times over the next several weeks to review and discuss the 2022 proposed budget – with our first meeting taking place next Thursday. I’m proud to report that the proposed budget does not increase the property tax levy over last year’s levy. For other highlights, check out the proposed budget document – which we’ve improved to make it more reader-friendly and understandable.
As always, feel free to contact me directly at agoczkowski@desplaines.org or 847-391-5301. Please share this E-News with your Des Plaines family, friends and neighbors and encourage them to subscribe.

City Council Update
City Council will meet on Oct. 4. The agenda will be posted here when it’s available. Watch the meeting live.
On the Agenda: The “Halston Market” development proposal – which includes 125 townhouse units on 11 acres of vacant property near the Oakton Corridor –is back on the agenda after being postponed earlier this summer. The developer has resubmitted the proposal to address some concerns raised. The revised proposal includes additional parking and a taller fence on the north side of the development. The site is located in the Oakton-Lee Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District and is targeted as an area of revitalization, which could include a future Metra train station.
Celebrate Des Plaines’ Diversity in October
National Diversity Week is the first week of October and the entire month is designated as Global Diversity Awareness Month. The City is committed to promoting and celebrating Des Plaines’ diversity. Check out this video that takes a closer look at how our diversity has shaped Des Plaines and contributed to our strength and success.
Construction Update: Algonquin Road Project
Please expect continued intermittent lane closures this week on Algonquin Road as the City finishes up the final few weeks of this major project. This week, crews will continue pavement base patching and install the first layer of asphalt along the westbound lanes. Lanes in each direction will be open by next week to be followed by striping and landscaping. Final project completion is scheduled for the end of October.
City Manager Names New Community and Economic Development Director
John Carlisle is the City’s new Director of Community and Economic Development. After interviewing multiple candidates, it became clear that the best person for the job was right here! John joined Des Plaines earlier this year as its Economic Development Manager and has served as Acting Director over the last several months. John is a Certified Planner with extensive experience in economic and community development and urban and regional planning, working both in local government and for our region’s planning agency (CMAP). The City will certainly benefit from John’s impressive knowledge and expertise, as well as his passion for public service.

COVID-19 cases are trending downward in Des Plaines, which is good news! Let’s keep it going. The best way to end this pandemic is to get vaccinated. In Cook County, you could have a chance to win $1,000 just by getting vaccinated or showing proof of vaccination. WGCI, Cook County Health and the Cook County Department of Public Health want you to share how #lifeisbettervaxxed. To enter, click here and submit a photo of yourself getting the COVID-19 vaccine or a picture of yourself with your vaccine sticker. One winner will be drawn each week for 10 weeks! (Please do not submit a photo of yourself with your vaccine card). For more information about where to get your shot, visit myshotcookcounty.com.
Fall is Here – Leave the Leaves for Pick-Up
The City provides leaf collection (City's Bulk Curbside Collection service) to residents starting Oct. 18 and continuing through early December, weather permitting. The leaf pick-up zone numbers are the same as the refuse pick up zone numbers. Check your Community Calendar (mailed last year) for pick-up dates, or visit our website at https://www.desplaines.org/leafcollection. Leaves need to be raked by 6 a.m. on the scheduled pick-up date. Please position the leaves into one neat, continuous row, one foot (12") from the curb. (Grass, branches, brush, rocks and other debris will not be collected).
This service is separate from LRS yard waste program. LRS collects properly placed yard waste materials on a weekly basis on the same day as your waste and recycling collection from April through the end of November. All yard waste must be placed in a proper receptacle, not to exceed 50 lbs in weight. Paper bags may also be used. User-owned cans should not exceed 35-gallons and should be clearly marked as 'Yard Waste.'
