Message from Your Mayor
Hi neighbors.
I am excited to announce that Des Plaines is one of only 12 communities across the country selected by Facebook to launch its newest feature, “Facebook Neighborhoods.” I was interviewed by CBS2 shortly after hearing the news. Facebook chose Des Plaines because of our robust online community, which includes the City’s Facebook pages (cityofdesplaines, desplainespolice, desplainestheatre) and several active community-run Facebook groups. The new space centralizes all the local groups that users could be a part of into one place where they can go and join all of them, and then going forward participate in all of them right from neighborhoods. Learn more about Facebook Neighborhoods.
COVID-19 continues to be a serious public health threat. Getting vaccinated is our best “shot” at beating COVID. The science tells us that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. They are proven to protect you from getting the virus, and especially from severe illness and death. We know that the Delta variant causes more infections and spreads faster than early forms of the virus and that vaccines reduce the risk of people spreading the virus. The bottom line: vaccines work and they’re easy to get. Let’s not go backward, Des Plaines! Getting the vaccine will help bring us back to our daily lives. Learn more at cookcountyil.gov/vaccine.

Please share this E-News with your Des Plaines family, friends and neighbors and encourage them to subscribe.

City Council Recap
The City Council met on Aug. 2.
Citing concerns over adequate parking for a proposed Romanian Heritage Center on Broadway Street near the Cumberland Circle roundabout, Council voted to reject the group’s request to operate there. A number of nearby residents attended the meeting to express their concerns over parking. Council asked the City’s staff to work with the group to find another possible location in the city to meet their needs.
Other items were routine business. View meeting video.
The next meeting of the City Council is Monday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m.

It’s Back to School Time! Slow Down Des Plaines
Back to school means more children and families on sidewalks and crosswalks and students waiting for busses on neighborhood street corners. The Des Plaines Police Department reminds motorists to slow down and pay attention – and not just in school traffic zones.
Please keep these tips in mind to save a child’s life and save yourself a ticket:
- Be aware of the location, active times and speed of school zones along your commute.
- Do not speed in school zones. The speed limit is 20 mph in school zones with flashing yellow lights. In school zones without flashing lights, the speed limit is 20 mph when children are present.
- Obey the crossing guards.
- Put your cell phone down.
- Avoid other multi-tasking while driving.
Lastly, anticipate anything and everything. Inattentive and excited children often dart out in front of cars without remembering to look first. Increased congestion and the unpredictability of younger children make school zones particularly dangerous.
