City Council Recap
The City Council decided to postpone discussing the “Halston Market” development proposal which proposes building 125 townhouse units on 11 acres of vacant property near the Oakton Corridor. Alderman Carla Brookman (5th Ward) represents this area. She requested the delay in order to discuss the project with local residents at a ward meeting. The site is located in the Oakton-Lee Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District and is targeted as an area of revitalization, which could include a future Metra train station.
Other items were routine business. View meeting video.
The next meeting of the City Council is Monday, Aug. 2. Visit the calendar on the City of Des Plaines homepage for other meetings and important dates.

Des Plaines COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Site Closes - Cook County Shifts to Hyperlocal, Community-based Vaccination Initiatives
The Des Plaines mass vaccination site in the old K-Mart served thousands of people each day at its peak. As demand for COVID-19 vaccines decrease, Cook County is taking a more hyper-local, community-based approach to vaccinations. Des Plaines Mayor Andrew Goczkowski and other City leaders joined Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle at a “Clap-Out Celebration” to thank and recognize everyone who helped to run the Des Plaines site over the past many months.
Cook County continues to provide the free vaccines to anyone age 12 and older. Visit MyShotCookCounty.com for info – including various locations here in Des Plaines.
 Know the Vax Facts!
COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. They met the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) rigorous scientific standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality needed to support emergency use authorization (EUA). Some people are vaccine reluctant because it has not received “FDA approval.” But, EUA and FDA approval can be thought of interchangeably in that FDA considers the COVID-19 vaccines “safe and effective.”

Fire Department Lends Helping Hand to WI Community
The Des Plaines Fire Department (DPFD) recently provided critical assistance to crews responding to a drowning in Williams Bay, WI. The City is one of only a handful of agencies in the region that has a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) – think robotic submarine controlled from the surface. DPFD fire personnel deployed the ROV, located and removed the victim from the water. Sadly, the team was unable to resuscitate the victim. Thanks to our highly-skilled DPFD personnel for lending a helping hand to our Wisconsin neighbors.
