Message from your Mayor
 Hi neighbors.
I’m excited to announce that I am recommending long-time Des Plaines resident, Maine West High School Counselor, and committed community advocate Shamoon Ebrahimi to serve as 8th Ward Alderman. This seat has been vacant since I was elected and sworn in as mayor in May. I submitted my endorsement to the City Council and I am confident they will approve this appointment at our July 6 meeting, upon which Alderman Ebrahimi will be sworn into office and take his seat on the dias.
The 8th Ward includes parts of the west and southwest sides of Des Plaines. View Ward 8 Precinct Map.
An immigrant from the Middle East, Shamoon has resided in Des Plaines for 20 years. He is a father of three young children and is actively engaged with the Des Plaines Assyrian community, as well as other immigrant groups.
Last week, I gave an address – IN PERSON - at the Des Plaines Chamber of Commerce & Industry meeting. It was so nice to see faces that I haven’t seen in too long. Congratulations to our Community Enhancement Award winners and to State Senator Laura Murphy for receiving the Community Partnership Excellence Award! I was proud to accept a first-of-its-kind award from the Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois naming Des Plaines as a “Better Business Town” for being business and consumer-friendly. City Council Recap
This past Monday, the City Council met for their second meeting of the month.
The Police Department provided an update on Council’s request to address speeding in neighborhoods after several aldermen received complaints from concerned residents. Especially during the summer months, speeding presents significantly higher risk because kids are off of school and playing outside.
Police continue to focus on enforcement in different neighborhoods, and consistently rotate the speed signs around. In addition, the City launched a “Slow Down Des Plaines” public awareness campaign, which includes videos and social media messages.

The rest of the meeting included routine business.

Des Plaines Named 'Better Business Town'
Congratulations Des Plaines, and especially our extraordinary businesses, for being recognized as a “Better Business Town.” Des Plaines is a top ranked community across the region for having businesses that rise above the rest. Des Plaines ranks 11th in total number of BBB Accredited Business and 15th in the most web traffic from consumers searching for reliable businesses. Read the news release.

Reminder: Des Plaines Hosts Fireworks July 2
The City of Des Plaines is hosting 4th of July Fireworks on Friday, July 2 at Oakton Community College at dusk. Guests are permitted to enter the grounds at 7 p.m. on Friday. Please note, Central Road will be closed to accommodate the fireworks display so all guests should enter the campus from Golf Road. Please visit our website for more details.
Thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured each year while using consumer fireworks. It’s important to understand the risks, which include devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death. It’s not worth it.
The Des Plaines Police Department and the Fire Department remind residents that fireworks are not only dangerous, they’re illegal. The message from the City: please, leave it to the professionals! Police officers will issue citations to those who break the law.
