Letter from the Interim Director of Cook County Department of Veterans Affairs Vanessa Walters
We said farewell to Cook County Department of Veterans Affairs (CCVA) Director Eric Armstrong in February. Eric was a dedicated leader whose commitment to serving our veterans and military families shaped so much of the work we do. His guidance, vision and support strengthened our team and advanced our mission in meaningful ways.
While we will certainly miss his presence, we are grateful for the impact he made and the foundation he leaves behind. On behalf of the entire team, we extend our sincere appreciation and wish him continued success in his next chapter.
Veteran Resources and Businesses Interactive Maps Now Available
Part of CCVA’s mission is to connect all available resources to the military and veteran communities in Cook County. In partnership with the Cook County Bureau of Technology’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division, CCVA has launched two virtual, interactive maps to highlight resources and supportive services available to veterans, service members and their families and provide a directory of veteran-owned businesses throughout the County.
Veterans, service members and their families often need quick access to economic opportunities, housing resources, legal and benefits assistance and wellness services. When information is scattered or outdated, barriers grow. By consolidating essential data into two centralized systems, Cook County ensures veterans can locate trusted resources easily, accurately and from any device.
The resource map can be used to locate veteran service organizations, such as American Legions, VFW posts and veteran service officers in Cook County. The veteran-owned business platform can help users quickly find and support businesses owned by members of the veteran community.

Veterans Benefits Administration Chicago Office Highlights
CCVA recently met with the leadership team at the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) Chicago regional office. The conversation centered on sharing current initiatives and exploring new opportunities to collaborate. Together, we discussed ways to better connect federal resources with County assets to strengthen the network of support available to veterans across Cook County. The visit reinforced our shared commitment to serving the veteran community.
Located at 2122 W. Taylor St., Chicago, IL 60612, the VBA Chicago regional office offers a wide range of services to veterans, service members, their families and survivors, including:
- Assistance with filing disability claims and appeals
- Support for educational benefits and programs like the GI Bill
- Help managing life insurance policies
- Guidance on VA-backed home loans
- Aid with pension programs for eligible veterans
- Services for job training, career counseling and employment assistance
If you are interested in any of these services, make an appointment with the Chicago regional officean in-person or phone appointment, depending on preference and needs.

Women's History Month
Women have long played a vital role in the United States military, from the American Revolution through present day. Women in uniform serve with distinction, break barriers and continue to shape the future of our armed forces. Today, women veterans represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the veteran population, bringing leadership, resilience and expertise to their communities.
In March, CCVA attended the Chicago Vet Center’s “Fabulous in Fatigues" event, a powerful celebration of women who have served their nation. The event created space to recognize the unique experiences of women veterans while fostering connection, empowerment and visibility.

CCVA also joined the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) for a special event recognizing 25 influential women veterans across Illinois. Among those honored was Cook County employee Justyna Berry. Justyna was recognized for her outstanding work with the Veterans Assistance Commission of Cook County (VACCC), connecting veterans with the benefits they earned. Her dedication highlights the critical role of local leadership in ensuring veterans receive the support they deserve.

Cook County Public Health
CCVA meets regularly with the Cook County Department of Public Health, reinforcing a shared commitment: at every level of government, veteran health matters and deserves dedicated attention.
Veterans, we need your voices.
The Cook County Department of Public Health is asking suburban Cook County residents—including our veteran community—to share their experiences, challenges and priorities through the Suburban Cook County Health Survey.
Beginning in January, health officials mailed invitations to randomly selected households. Surveys will continue to be distributed through April.
If you receive a survey invitation, we strongly encourage you to respond and make your voice heard. Your insight can help shape healthier, more supportive communities for all who have served.

Cook County DD-214 Access and Recording
The Cook County Clerk’s Office offers several important services for veterans, including confidential DD‑214 recording and access to the Military and Veterans Discount Card program. These resources help protect vital documents and connect veterans with valuable benefits throughout the County.
DD-214 Recording
Veterans can record their DD-214 discharge papers with the Clerk’s Office for safekeeping. Filing is free, confidential and includes a certified copy. Overall, this service streamlines access to, and protects, vital resources. To put in a request to get your DD-214 or file it with the County, visit: https://www.cookcountyclerkil.gov/veterans/veterans-info.
Military and Veterans Discount Card
Military members and veterans residing in Cook County are eligible for free County-issued ID cards that grant access to discounts at hundreds of local businesses. Apply online or visit the Clerk’s Veterans Services Office at 118 N. Clark, Room 120, Chicago, IL 60602. Bring proof of service (e.g., DD-214, VA card) and a photo ID.

Upcoming Events
Veterans and military families with dogs are invited to take advantage of Cook County’s free Vets and Pets vaccination and microchip clinics, a program offered by CCVA in partnership with the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control (ARC).

Military Appreciation Day at Brookfield Zoo
CCVA is proud to partner with Brookfield Zoo on Oct. 17, 2026, for Military Appreciation Day at the Discovery Center. The event is a celebration honoring veterans, service members and their families and will take place from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. At Military Appreciation Day, attendees can interact with vendors and organizations offering resources for veterans and service members. Information will also be available for anyone interested in joining the military. It’s a family friendly day designed to connect our community with valuable services while enjoying all the zoo has to offer.
Registration for the event will open in August.
