The deadline to file for exemptions is April 29, 2024
The deadline for homeowners to apply for property tax exemptions is Monday, April 29, 2024. Exemptions are property tax savings that contribute to lowering a property owner’s tax bill.
As a reminder, homeowners must reapply for the Veterans with Disabilities and Low-Income Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze (the “Senior Freeze”) Exemptions.
Seniors and veterans that need to reapply were mailed application booklets from the Assessor’s Office. These should be returned by April 29, or homeowners can apply online or in-person to make the deadline.
If a property owner who did not receive such a booklet and believes they are eligible for one of these exemptions, they should apply online or in-person by April 29.
The Homeowner, Senior, and Persons with Disabilities Exemptions are automatically renewed.
New homeowners, first-time applicants, or those that need to reapply can do so online by visiting www.cookcountyassessor.com/exemptions. Applying online is easy, free, and can be done under ten minutes.
Exemptions forms are available in Spanish, Polish, and simplified Chinese languages. Applications can be downloaded at www.cookcountyassessor.com/exemptions.
Savings from exemptions are only reflected on the second installment tax bill.

Assessor Kaegi interviewed ahead of 2024 Chicago reassessment
In March, Assessor Kaegi was interviewed by Urban Land, a publication by the Urban Land Institute.
Assessor Kaegi spoke about the upcoming Chicago reassessment, and why predictions of an “urban doom loop” misconstrue the city’s property tax system. In addition, he shared some ideas for what it might take to revitalize the Loop: “All decision-makers in the public and private sectors have to work together to find solutions and ways to add to the revitalization [of downtown], reposition some of the space for other purposes, and enhance amenities downtown so people want to live in apartments.”

Assessor is pleased to share the Strategic Plan
The Assessor's Office is excited to share the release of the new Strategic Plan that will guide our work from 2024-2027. In the past six years, we have modernized the office and reduced inequality across our property tax system, but there are many systemic problems that still must be addressed.
This new plan focuses on data integrity, distinguished service, and teamwork culture as the pillars of our approach to reform.
