Cook County Establishes New Center for Hard to Recycle Materials

The Cook County Department of Environment and Sustainability has partnered with South Suburban College to establish the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM Center). This new, permanent recycling drop-off facility officially opens on Saturday, April 22 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. and is available to all Cook County residents. Accepted materials for reuse and recycling include:  

  • paper, plastic, metal and glass
  • clothing and textiles
  • styrofoam
  • electronics and computers
  • personal healthcare equipment

Coinciding with the opening of the CHaRM Center, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is sponsoring a one-day hazardous waste collection event for residents on Saturday, April 22 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Accepted hazardous waste materials include: 

  • oil-based paints, paint thinners and aerosol paints
  • used motor oil and old gasoline
  • herbicides, insecticides, pesticides and lawn/pool chemicals
  • mercury, acids, household batteries and corrosives
  • drain cleaners, solvents, antifreeze and hobby chemicals
  • fluorescent light bulbs

Both recycling initiatives will be held on Saturday, April 22 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at South Suburban College located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, IL 60473.
