The Cook County Assessor's Office would like to inform you that exemption applications can now be filed online. There are significant changes for tax year 2022, please see the list outlined below.
We are proud to announce that the exemption application (counter form) is now available for download in English, Spanish, simplified Chinese, and Polish languages.
We are also excited to announce that we are switching over to a new online application platform, that is more user-friendly and built into our larger technologic upgrade. Lastly, you are encouraged to download a Digital Toolkit that contains prewritten messages and graphics for your newsletter, website, social media, and other communication platforms.
Legislative Changes For tax years 2020 and 2021, due to COVID, legislators allowed us to auto renew the following exemptions:
- "Senior Freeze" Exemption
- Persons with Disabilities Exemption
- Veterans with Disabilities Exemption
For tax year 2022 (this year), only the following exemptions will auto renew:
- Homeowner Exemption
- Senior Exemption
- Persons with Disabilities Exemption (due to new legislation)
Some other major changes include:
- The "Senior Freeze" Exemption, has been renamed to the Low-Income Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze.
- Seniors applying for the "Senior Freeze" can verify income by showing proof of enrollment in the following state programs.
- Aid to the Aged, Blind or Disabled (AABD) Program
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
- Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
- The Benefit Access Program
- Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program
- Recipients of the Persons with Disabilities (tax year 2021) will now be automatically renewed (tax year 2022).
- Applicants of the Persons with Disabilities can show a Physician’s Statement for Proof of Disability completed by a physician or optometrist.
- Veterans with Disabilities that are rated 100% disabled and are “permanently and totally disabled” per the Department of Veterans Affairs will be identified by staff and automatically renewed in tax year 2023.
