Have you received mail from our office?
Here is everything you need to know
Property tax exemptions provide savings on a homeowner's property tax bill. The Assessor’s Office administers exemptions for homeowners, seniors, veterans, and persons with disabilities.
This year, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, hundreds of thousands of property taxpayers will have the existing exemptions on their homes automatically renewed—with no application needed!
Others will need to apply for exemptions by March 31 in order to receive property tax savings on second installment tax bills this summer.
This year hundreds of thousands households will receive mail from the Assessor that confirms the auto-renewal of the exemptions placed on their homes. Additionally, some will be newly eligible or need to recertify. If you received a letter, postcard, or booklet from our office, please read carefully as either you are being notified that you don't need to reapply or that you may be eligible for an exemption.
Here are some important reminders.
- Exemptions are applied to the second installment property tax bill that is mailed in the summer by the Cook County Treasurer's Office.
- Most homeowners who received the Homeowner, Senior, Senior Freeze, Persons with Disabilities, or Veterans with Disabilities for tax year 2019 will not have to reapply for tax year 2020 as they are automatically renewed.
