Share this opportunity to shape the future with safer travel
Please help us make sure your experiences on northeastern Illinois’ roads — and those of your community or network — are included in countywide safety action plans. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is working with six counties in the region to understand traffic safety issues and plan for a safer future.
Users can visit the Safe Travel for All project page, and county pages linked within, to:
- Drop pins on the safety hotspots map
- Take the traffic safety survey (and enter to win a $100 Visa gift card!)
- Get details on events and open houses
- Sign up for project updates

Travel safety featured in CMAP's 2024 annual report
2024 was an exciting year for CMAP's travel safety program! We released the Speed Management report, which explores the role of speeding in increased deaths and serious injuries on our region’s roads. We also partnered with counties in the region to launch the regionwide Safe Travel for All initiative (discussed above). We look forward to continuing this critical work to serve, strengthen, and empower our region alongside our partners in 2025.

CMAP represents Chicago at global symposium on streets and planning
CMAP has been busy not just around the region, but at a global scale! Senior Planner Vickie Barrett attended the first World Street Congress hosted by Chicago’s sister city, Osaka, Japan. The purpose of the event was to share best practices and challenges in creating people-centered spaces on our city streets. Each participating city brought public sector and private sector organizations; CMAP was proud to represent Chicago alongside the Magnificent Mile Association.

Let’s resolve to say “crashes” not “accidents"
The new year is an opportunity to reflect on priorities and how our work reflects our values. As transportation professionals embrace the principles of the Safe System Approach — that traffic deaths and injuries are not inevitable — we're compelled to examine how our language reflects these values. That’s why CMAP is committed to saying “crashes,” not “accidents" — the latter implies that nothing can be done, "accidents happen." Our region is working together to plan for a safer transportation system that significantly reduces, and ultimately eliminates, serious injuries and deaths on our roadways. We hope you, our partner in safety, will join us in taking this small but important step toward a traffic safety culture that views every crash as preventable.

Provide input on suburban bus network plan
Pace’s ReVision project will reimagine the entire suburban bus network to better serve the region’s post-pandemic travel needs. Communities can help shape the future of public transportation by taking this survey.

Prepare for safe travel in winter weather
The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police, and Illinois Tollway remind drivers to make a plan for snow and ice on the roads. The “Winter Weather – Get it Together” campaign outlines steps drivers can take, including checking road conditions, preparing an emergency kit, giving snowplows space, and allowing extra travel time.
We also encourage communities to ensure that sidewalks are cleared so pedestrians and people who use a mobility device are able to safely reach their destination.

New federal resources support safer travel for all road users
- The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently published a set of case studies that highlight how states are implementing the Safe System Approach, including examples from Illinois.
- The FHWA's Roadway Safety Noteworthy Practices Database is a free, online resource to help transportation agencies address roadway safety challenges. It contains more than 300 case studies and is searchable by topic, state, and year.
- The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials recently released its “Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, 5th Edition,” which provides information on the planning, design, and operation of bikeways along streets, roads, and highways, as well as on off-street paths in urban, suburban, and rural settings.
