Communities can apply now for local planning assistance
Communities throughout northeastern Illinois now can submit applications to receive planning support to make roads safer, increase accessibility, and improve connections for all users. The annual call for communities to apply for technical assistance officially opens today, Monday, February 26.
The online application covers the different program offerings and asks interested applicants a series of questions to identify their project goals and strategies. Communities can submit applications until the call closes at noon Friday, March 22. For any questions about the application process, email applications@cmap.illinois.gov.
The planning assistance opportunities offered through the call are meant to support communities as they continue to collaborate, innovate, and plan for a more prosperous future post-pandemic. Northeastern Illinois also has extraordinary opportunities to modernize and improve transportation with the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Communities selected for projects will have opportunities to strengthen planning capacity, cultivate innovative transportation approaches, and better prepare for the many funding opportunities available under the new infrastructure law.
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) partnered again with the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) to host this year’s call for projects.
This coordinated approach allows CMAP and RTA to offer planning and implementation assistance to an expanded base of eligible applicants. It also aligns with ON TO 2050, the comprehensive plan for northeastern Illinois, and Transit is the Answer, the regional transit strategic plan. Projects selected for planning assistance will be announced in early June.

Village of Lansing Capital Improvement Plan
Through a 2023 technical assistance award, CMAP is providing support to the Village of Lansing, Illinois to create the village’s first capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP will help the village plan out future capital investments, pursue funding opportunities, and move from reactive repairs to proactive maintenance. This project includes participatory budgeting –– a process that will result in the community voting on projects, comprised of a steering committee of residents and local leaders –– to influence the final capital improvement plan. Creating a CIP that elevates community input will help create collective buy-in and align investments with community values and priorities.

Butterfield Road Corridor Plan
The Butterfield Road Corridor Plan is a multi-jurisdictional project in partnership with the villages of Lombard, Downers Grove, and Oak Brook, as well as the DuPage County Department of Transportation. The plan's goals include improving multi-modal transportation options throughout the corridor, improving access to parks and open space, ensuring that the corridor is resilient to changing commercial and office market conditions, and improving quality of life for current and future residents. In January of this year, the corridor plan was finalized based on feedback from the project partners and stakeholder input.
