A year of significant progress: annual report highlights work that makes our region stronger
Northeastern Illinois had an exceptional year, with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) supporting a shared vision and ON TO 2050 goals that make our region a stronger, more resilient place to live.
CMAP’s 2022 Annual Report looks back at the significant progress we made and highlights our work toward improving the region’s transportation system, addressing climate resiliency, and ensuring we have a thriving economy –– while embracing and applying an equity lens. The report also highlights our continued efforts to deliver local assistance and resources and inform and engage diverse audiences.

How can the viability of transit be ensured in the decades to come?
CMAP Executive Director Erin Aleman participated in a recent transportation conference, sharing thoughts and expertise on the importance of transit reform and why change is needed to ensure the viability of transit in the decades to come.
Panelists shared perspectives on the fiscal cliff facing transit systems, and the role transit plays in spurring economic development and addressing equity and accessibility. Aleman stressed the role all CMAP partners play to make sure transit can better serve people no matter where they’re headed.
“We’re making historical investments in transportation capital, but what are we doing if we can’t run it?” Aleman said. “If we are going to change transit, we need to change the way decisions are made.”
The conference, called “Public Transit in a Post-Covid World: Building a Financially Stable, Equitable, and Accessible Mass Transit System," was co-hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the Civic Federation, and the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago.
Questions about governance, along with improvements to service and rider experience and funding options, also have dominated CMAP’s ongoing work with stakeholders to develop and submit a Plan of Action for Regional Transit (PART) to the governor and Illinois General Assembly by January 1, 2024.

Mobility can become more equitable, accessible, and sustainable. Find out how at upcoming summit
The 2023 National Shared Mobility Summit takes place May 2 through May 4 at Merchandise Mart Plaza in Chicago. The theme is "All Together Now: Action + Accountability for People-Focused Mobility."
CMAP Senior Transportation Planner Victoria Barrett will be part of a breakout session — "Equitable, Electric, Effortless: Envisioning a City Built for E-bikes." She will join a conversation on the implications of car-centric planning. The panel will explore the question: “What would a city look like if it were designed for e-bikes, instead of cars?"
Keynote speakers will be Veronica Vanterpool, deputy administrator of the Federal Transit Administration, and Alison Sant, co-founder and partner of the Studio for Urban Projects.
Summit sessions will explore making mobility more reliable, equitable, accessible, and sustainable through several topics, including funding and affordability, tools and incentives, metrics and outcomes, and infrastructure.

Future Leaders in Planning: seeking high school students interested in urban planning
We have an opportunity for high school students who are creative, analytical, and passionate about making their community a better place to live.
CMAP is now accepting applications for our 2023 Future Leaders in Planning (FLIP) program. FLIP is a free summer program for high school students to explore the field of urban planning and learn about the issues that shape our region and communities. Students will learn about planning topics through engaging sessions, activities, and site visits.
When: Monday, July 10, through Friday, July 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Where: CMAP's office in downtown Chicago (433 W. Van Buren St.), plus locations around the region
FLIP is open to high school students in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties. The program is completely free to students, and includes snacks, meals, public transportation to and from sessions, and swag.
Students must apply online by Tuesday, May 30.

Request for proposals: CMAP seeks consultant for Safe Streets and Roads for All safety action plans
CMAP is requesting proposals for project oversight and management for the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Countywide Safety Action Plans in northeastern Illinois. The deadline for responding to the RFP is 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 5.
CMAP is seeking a consultant to provide project management and oversight of the development, delivery processes, and quality control of activities related to the SS4A Countywide Safety Action Plan program. This will include assistance with the selection, management and oversight of up to seven consultants that will develop six countywide safety action plans and one regionwide engagement and equity campaign.

IDOT invites applications for grant program to expand safe, equitable access to public transportation
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) seeks applications for a competitive grant program that aims to expand safe, equitable access to public transportation. Grants will fund studies on planning and preliminary engineering issues regarding multimodal transportation.
Previously chosen projects focused on topics ranging from bus-on-shoulder travel to transit equity, trails and bikeways, transit system expansion, travel behavior of people with disabilities and transportation for veterans.
Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24. Awards will be announced this summer. The program's total funding is $2.5 million, and awards average $200,000 and require a 20 percent non-federal match. Governmental entities such as counties, metropolitan planning agencies, municipalities, state agencies, public transit agencies, and state universities are urged to apply.
