2023 State of the Region: Thriving Together
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning's (CMAP) State of the Region program celebrates the organizations and individuals successfully working to improve northeastern Illinois, its communities, and its people, while bringing attention to public sentiment on key quality-of-life issues.
This year's public opinion survey provides a snapshot of residents' attitudes toward key issues — including transportation, the economy, and climate — and identifies successes and challenges across the region.

What do residents most value about northeastern Illinois? What are their top concerns? And where do they want to see improvements? CMAP conducted a public opinion survey to better understand the priorities and experiences of community members and see how ON TO 2050, the region's long-range plan, can address the most pressing issues.

New tool to strengthen regional economic development
A new innovative tool on job quality and access will help economic development organizations and other partners across the region improve northeastern Illinois' economic position.
Communities can use the job quality and accessibility tool to understand the advantages of their local labor market, identify where support is needed, and develop action plans to strengthen industries that support shared prosperity.
CMAP worked with TIP Strategies to develop the tool and an accompanying plan, which provides a set of strategies to improve regional coordination of economic development and COVID-19 recovery efforts. This work is one result of efforts by CMAP, the county board chairs, the City of Chicago, economic development organizations, and other partners to boost economic growth through regional coordination.

Natural Solutions Tool prioritizes areas for nature-based solutions in your community
Friends of the Chicago River and The Trust for Public Land released the new Natural Solutions Tool to help the region use green infrastructure to address community and environmental problems.
The Natural Solutions Tool helps focus strategic investments on green infrastructure, prioritize communities of greatest need, and reveal where the multiple benefits of nature-based solutions can improve community and environmental health.
The Greater Chicago Watershed Council –– of which CMAP is a part –– has created the free, publicly available Natural Solutions Tool, which covers 1,300 square miles and includes nearly 1.5 million parcels in 176 municipalities and 42 subwatersheds in Cook, Lake, DuPage, and Will Counties.

Can data deliver? Join UIC Urban Forum
The availability of vast amounts of data from and about cities offers great potential to address urban challenges. However, large and serious questions challenge this potential. On April 19, the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Urban Forum will dive into the questions, as panelists and speakers discuss how we can harness data-driven solutions for urban challenges.
