On Thursday, October 9, the City of Aurora was alerted to a number of ICE sightings throughout the area, inciting panic and fear among residents. This unconstitutional deployment of Federal officers resulted in multiple snatchings of community members, targeting, specifically, our City’s strong and diverse Hispanic population. 
 
As Mayor, I am committed to fighting for our residents against racism and fascism. I utterly condemn the wrongful use of Federal funds to violate the civil rights of our residents. This overarching power grab by the Presidential administration is one that is rooted in intimidation and racial profiling, and I vigorously oppose this in our community.  
 
Our residents continue to remain my top priority. The City of Aurora had previously refrained from putting out a statement about immigration enforcement activities to protect our most vulnerable residents from being targeted. The large presence of ICE officials and deputized bounty hunters in our community, though, has demanded a public response. Yesterday, I marched with community members from downtown Aurora to the site of one of the ICE snatchings to show my support for those whose lives have tragically been affected by these raids. As your Mayor, I am here for you, and I want you know that you are not alone. The Mayor’s Office is actively working with elected officials at the local, state, and federal level to put together citizen-led patrols that bring awareness to ICE activity, plus coordinating conversations with the families of residents who are detained.   
 
It is also important to note that the Aurora Police Department has not cooperated nor coordinated with immigration enforcement officials, abiding by the Illinois TRUST Act. Despite claims that APD assisted ICE officials in the detention of a resident yesterday, body camera footage clearly shows the opposite. APD officers are not permitted to stop, arrest, search, or detain individuals solely based on their citizenship or immigration status. Our public safety personnel have one mission: to protect and serve the citizens of Aurora. This will not change, even with the enhanced presence of ICE in our community. 
 
I would like to call on residents to continue to exercise your First Amendment right to peacefully protest. Yesterday, we witnessed a resident breaking the window of a moving vehicle, resulting in an arrest to prevent further violence or property damage. Additionally, during a large protest on East New York Street and North Madison Street, protesters put themselves and the public in danger by walking in the roadway, blocking streets, and driving recklessly. These actions required APD to shut the protest down. There were no arrests, no injuries, no property damage, and no tear gas deployed.

Please know that I will never stop working to protect each and every one of our residents. We have your back, and we are here to both denounce and fight against any form of fascism, militarization, and hate.

El jueves 9 de octubre, la Ciudad de Aurora fue alertada sobre varios avistamientos de agentes de ICE en toda la zona, lo que generó pánico y temor entre los residentes. Este despliegue inconstitucional de agentes federales resultó en múltiples secuestros de miembros de la comunidad, especialmente actuando contra la numerosa y diversa población hispana de nuestra ciudad. 

Como alcalde, estoy comprometido a luchar por nuestros residentes contra el racismo y el fascismo. Condeno rotundamente el uso indebido de fondos federales para violar los derechos civiles de nuestros residentes. Esta apropiación desmedida de poder por parte de la administración presidencial se basa en la intimidación y la discriminación racial, y me opongo vigorosamente a que esto ocurra en nuestra comunidad. 

Nuestros residentes siguen siendo mi principal prioridad. La Ciudad de Aurora se había abstenido previamente de emitir un comunicado sobre las actividades de control migratorio para proteger a nuestros residentes más vulnerables. Sin embargo, la gran presencia de agentes de ICE y cazarrecompensas en nuestra comunidad ha exigido una respuesta pública. Ayer, marché con miembros de la comunidad desde el centro de Aurora hasta el lugar de uno de los secuestros por parte de ICE para mostrar mi apoyo a quienes han sido trágicamente afectados por estas redadas. Como su alcalde, estoy aquí para apoyarlos y quiero que sepan que no están solos. La Alcaldía está trabajando activamente con funcionarios electos a nivel local, estatal y federal para organizar patrullas ciudadanas que concienticen sobre la actividad de ICE, además de coordinar conversaciones con las familias de los residentes detenidos. 

También es importante señalar que el Departamento de Policía de Aurora no ha cooperado ni coordinado con los agentes de inmigración, en cumplimiento de la Ley TRUST de Illinois. A pesar de las afirmaciones de que el Departamento de Policía de Aurora (APD) colaboró con agentes de ICE en la detención de un residente ayer, las imágenes de la cámara corporal muestran claramente lo contrario. Los agentes del APD no tienen permitido detener, arrestar, registrar ni detener a personas únicamente por su ciudadanía o estado migratorio. Nuestro personal de seguridad pública tiene una sola misión: proteger y servir a los ciudadanos de Aurora. Esto no cambiará, ni siquiera con la mayor presencia de ICE en nuestra comunidad. 

Quiero hacer un llamado a los residentes para que continúen ejerciendo su derecho a protestar pacíficamente, amparados por la Primera Enmienda. Ayer, presenciamos cómo un residente rompió la ventana de un vehículo en movimiento, lo que resultó en un arresto para evitar más violencia o daños a la propiedad. Además, durante una gran protesta en las calles East New York y North Madison, los manifestantes se pusieron en peligro a sí mismos y al público al caminar por la calzada, bloquear calles y conducir imprudentemente. Estas acciones obligaron al Departamento de Policía de Aurora (APD) a apaciguar las protestas. No hubo arrestos, heridos, daños materiales ni tampoco se utilizaron gases lacrimógenos.
