Get to Know Mobile Library South
Cork County Council Library Service's fleet of mobile libraries play a huge role in providing outreach to library members in the most rural parts of Cork County. Our mobile libraries are managed by Mícheál O’Flaherty and Mobile Library South is staffed by Christine Cronin and driven by Thomas Cronin.
Our opening hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm and you can contact us by calling 0858518967 or email mobilelibrary.south@corkcoco.ie

Mobile libraries are staffed by only one person, usually a Senior Library Assistant. I have been working on Mobile South since October 2019.
I make sure the bus is fully stocked with books for adults and children, and before we leave the Council yard each morning, I make sure to bring any requested items with me so they're ready to be collected at our stops along the way.
|
Contrary to what a lot of the children on our school visits think, I do not drive the bus myself!
It’s driven by Library Driver Thomas Cronin (no relation) who is normally up front in the driving cab - the students can see him so that's why they think I drive it.
Thomas is responsible each day for making sure the bus is fuelled up, tyres are at the correct pressure, and that everything is ok with the mobile library. Once he gives it the all-clear, off we go. Thomas knows the roads like the back of his hand so we always make our stops in good time.
|
We do a fortnightly rotation of stops stretching from Barryroe in the west to Grenagh in the north, Whitegate in the east and Kinsale in the south. We serve library members at house stops, village stops, schools, playgroups, nursing homes and day care-centres. The bus is equipped with a wheelchair lift which is regularly used. Some families have been coming to the mobile library for 55 years and more across 3 generations!
Covid impacted our service as it did most everything. However, thanks to the closeness between our staff and our library members, we were very quickly able to set up a regular delivery schedule and bring books and audiobooks to the homes of our more vulnerable and housebound patrons. We knew which library members were most in need, and after a quick phone call, we would put together a box with items by their favourite authors and of their favourite genres.
There was huge gratitude and appreciation from the recipients and their families, and it led to Cork County Library Service winning a national award for community service during Covid.
Now in October, we are busy visiting the 34 schools on our route. In most cases, two pupils from each class, second class to sixth, come on to the mobile to choose books for the entire class. For the younger classes, the teacher, or an S.N.A are welcome to come on and choose a batch of books which they can keep for either two weeks or for a term.
We have a waiting list of schools wanting us to visit them. This year, we are managing to add Crosshaven G.N.S, Carrigtwohill Scoil Clochar Mhuire, and Circle Time Playschool in Whitechurch to the schedule.
Because our time at our stops is brief, Mobile South doesn’t have any clubs or regular activities but we do get involved in initiatives like Poetry Day, Summer Stars, Spring into Storytime etc. Also, we have taken part in the Cork Summer show and Ploughing Festival - the new buses were a huge hit with the public.
We love to see new faces so should you see us anywhere on our travels feel free to pop in to say ‘Hello’ or to become a member. If you are already a member of another library, you can use your card on the mobile as at any other public library.
Finally, should you or anyone you know like to avail of the mobile library service in your area, please contact 085 8518967 and we will do our very best to facilitate you.

Historical Memorabilia at Dunmanway Library
There is a fascinating collection of historical memorabilia relating to Dunmanway on display in Dunmanway Library. The collection is kindly on loan from Andy Collins and features photographs, medals, old brochures, and even a traditional West Cork Hooded Cloak.
One of the most intriguing items is a medal presented to the late Patrick Collins, a Dunmanway native who worked on the ill-fated Lusitania as a fireman, and lost his life on its final voyage after it was bombed by a German U-boat in 1915 before sinking off the coast of Cork.
It contains beautifully handwritten invoices and receipts from 1940’s and 50’s which in 2023, look like works of art. It is a truly wonderful snapshot of the town and its inhabitants from a long-ago era.
