Sandpoint, Idaho — Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) has begun harvest operations and road reconstruction activities on state endowment lands located outside the Round Lake State Park boundary. These management activities will occur on endowment property only, not on state park lands.
For the safety of the public, the interpretive trail segments that leave Round Lake State Park and enter adjoining endowment lands will be temporarily closed whenever operations are active. Closure signs will be posted at locations where the trail exits the park boundary and crosses onto endowment land.
Heavy equipment—including skidders, loaders, feller-bunchers, and log trucks—will be working in these endowment areas. Unsafe encounters between recreationalists and operating equipment have already occurred, making the closures necessary to prevent serious accidents.
Members of the public are reminded:
- Trail closures apply only to the portions of the interpretive trail located on endowment lands outside the state park.
- Do not enter closed areas.
- Do not approach operating equipment at any time. Equipment operators may not see or hear people nearby.
- Obey all posted signs and barriers.
- Closures will remain in effect whenever operations create unsafe conditions for recreation.
IDL will reopen trail access on endowment land as soon as all hazardous activities are completed and the area is safe for public use. Trails located within Round Lake State Park remain under the management of Idaho State Parks and Recreation and are not part of this closure.
These forest management actions are part of IDL’s ongoing mission to sustainably manage Idaho’s endowment trust lands while generating long-term financial returns for Idaho’s public schools.
