SAFER grant program provides funds to assist in increasing the number of firefighters to help communities meet industry minimum standards and attain 24-hour staffing to provide adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. Wildland firefighter training and wildland PPE are also funded.
FP&S grant program provides funding for fire prevention programs and supports firefighter health and safety research and development. Wildland urban interface projects such as community risk assessments, adoption or reinstatement of WUI fire codes, and WUI education/awareness projects are funded.

Eligibility Overview:
- Fire departments
- National, regional, state, local, tribal, and nonprofit interest organizations representing the interests of volunteer firefighters are eligible to receive a SAFER Program award under the R&R Activity.
- Both private and public nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply for funding under the FP&S Activity.
- National, state, local, federally recognized Tribal Nation and nonprofit organizations, such as academic (e.g., universities), research foundations, public safety institutes, public health, occupational health, and injury prevention institutions are eligible to apply for funding under the R&D Activity.
