Building a Dream Team
Palouse Land Trust 2024 Newsletter
Managing land and waters for health, sustainability, and resiliency is a tall order for any landowner. Coupled with the added complexities of fragile ecosystems, public use, and the impacts of a changing climate, stewarding important landscapes is a monumental task. And one we can’t do without some A-team, all-star, pro-level partners. Partners like Mike McManus and the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL). Mike and his crew, based out of the Deary office, are indispensable partners providing technical assistance, highly skilled labor, and expertise. This summer, the IDL team held chainsaw training on the Olson Family Conservation Preserve. Not only did PLT staff get a refresher on safe chainsaw use, but the crew put their training to work thinning dead trees and reducing fire fuels along Highway 8.

IDL rescinds closed fire season order
Idaho County Free Press, 11-13-24
Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) rescinded its extended closed fire season order, effective Nov. 1, due to cooler temperatures and reduced fire risk across the state. This change lifts the statewide requirement for IDL burn permits on private land outside city limits.
While IDL will no longer require burn permits after this date, voluntarily obtaining a free permit is still encouraged to assist fire managers and are available at https://burnpermits.idaho.gov/. IDL encourages anyone planning to burn to check with local fire authorities and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (IDEQ) for any local permits or restrictions for open burning or air quality in their area.

LAND LEASE INCREASE A DISGRACE
Thank you, Idaho Department of Land, for increasing my land lease 308% this year. Thank you for calling this new price the "market price". I'm sorry your "market price" failed to receive one bid when you took the property to auction this summer. I'm sorry not one person in the world agreed with your "market price". Thank you for pushing our family out of the cabin my dad built 50 years ago. Your department is a disgrace and should be ashamed of themselves.

By doing our part to prevent unwanted fires, we’re reducing the risks firefighters face and allowing them to focus on naturally caused incidents. Let’s show our appreciation by taking simple actions—extinguish fires completely, don’t burn on windy days, and always check local restrictions. Every small effort counts. Toget…
