Wallen Fire Update
October 5, 2024, 6:45 PM PT
Date of Origin: October 4, 2024
Location: approximately 2 miles northeast of Moscow, ID
Estimated Size: 125 acres
Containment: 50%
Cause: Under Investigation
Current situation:
The Latah County Sheriff’s Office is keeping evacuation levels and road closures the same as earlier today. No structures have been lost. Information can be found on the Latah County Sheriff's Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/LatahCountySO .
The estimated size of the wildfire is larger due to better mapping; however, the fire did not grow outside the fire line. There was moderate activity inside the perimeter with a few torching trees.
Cooler temperatures, higher humidity and light winds made easier work for the firefighters as they continued to establish control lines and start mopping up. The fire is laying down this evening as well and little to no activity is expected overnight.
Smoke will continue to be visible in the perimeter of the fire for many days to come and should not be a concern for the public.
For better understanding, containment of a section of fire is determined when firefighters no longer have to worry the fire might move. It might be contained by a fireline, road or some factor that will prevent fire movement.
Resources are extremely limited, so Idaho Department of Lands is grateful for assistance from local volunteer firefighters and Bennett Lumber employees. A local private dozer operated today as well.
