North-central Idaho forest improvements underway with Good Neighbor Authority partnership
Idaho Capital Sun, 9-12-24
The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests and Idaho Department of Fish and Game are working to improve north-central Idaho fish and wildlife habitats and restore forest ecosystem health.
The years-long Good Neighbor Authority partnership now has another $1.3 million for the work, the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests announced in a news release Wednesday.
“We’ve demonstrated our commitment to build a strong partnership that we hoped would support our priorities in the long term,” Tara Ball, Idaho Department of Fish and Game’s partnership lead, said in a news release. “We are starting to see this transpire with work in the Selway, South Fork, and North Fork watersheds and are excited to do good things for wildlife in areas where it matters most.”
In 2020, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game joined the partnership with the national forest. The Idaho Department of Lands is also a partner.

Daring to Leap: Meet Paris Harris
Mountain Journal, 9-10-24
It was peaceful from the bench outside of the Deary, Idaho fire station just after the Fourth of July. Birds were calling and answering, and Potato Hill, colloquially called “Spud,” rose in the distance. Deary has a population around 500, quite a change from the southern suburbs of Chicago where Paris Harris grew up.
Harris had never been to Idaho, nor had she been in a car for 27 straight hours, which was how long it took her and her father to drive from their home in Calumet Park, Illinois. The trip was a big deal for Harris in the summer of 2023. After all, she was about to enter her first year at the University of Idaho.
“Being in the city your whole life, you just feel trapped,” said Harris, now 19 and starting her sophomore year at U of I. “But when you go out here you see things you’ve never seen before like all these different types of trees and mountains … it’s very beautiful.”
...
Harris would be a new “first” if she takes her inaugural leap out of a plane as a member of firefighting’s most elite force. She spent this summer fighting wildfires on an engine crew with the Idaho Department of Lands, during which she reported to 15 fires, working the engine and digging fireline. As of early September, according to the National Interagency Wildfire Center, 1,088 fires in Idaho had burned more than 750,000 acres so far this year.
Harris is still grappling with all the firsts. “I feel like I am making my mark in history, but I don’t know,” she said.
Illegally Placed Buoys to be Removed from Coeur d’Alene Lake
DailyFly, 9-3-24
(COEUR D’ALENE, ID) – Authorities will remove illegal buoys in Lake Coeur d’Alene and the Spokane River. In response to boaters coming too close to docks and shorelines, some waterfront property owners have placed unpermitted buoys in the water to mark the no wake area. This presents a danger to those recreating in the water.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) and Kootenai County Parks and Waterways are asking for the public’s assistance in Kootenai County to help solve this problem.
Safety is the first priority of our all three agencies in regard to our local waterways and we are asking for a spirit of cooperation and consideration for others. Boaters, please follow local ordinances regarding wake zones, to help protect the property and beauty of the lakes and rivers. Property owners, please do not put out illegal buoys as they create a hazard by interfering with navigation.

Nez Perce-Clearwater Forest updates ‘good neighbor’ agreements
Lewiston-Tribune, 9-1-24
The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest recently updated agreements with the Idaho Department of Lands, Nez Perce Tribe, Idaho County and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game that allow the entities to work on federal land.
Known as good neighbor authorities, the agreements are designed to foster collaborative work and increase efficiency. For example, the nonfederal entities are sometimes able to move quicker to implement federally approved actions like timber sales, road work or restoration projects.
“Good Neighbor Authority projects have extended our ability to perform critical work on the 4-million acre Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests,” said Molly Ryabn, acting supervisor of the forest.

Outdoor Funding Council Seeks Candidate Projects to Enhance Recreation in Idaho
DailyFly, 8-31-24
The Outdoor Recreation Fund Advisory Council (ORFAC) is accepting applications to build projects that expand recreational opportunities within Idaho. For 2024, the council has $5 million to spend on capital projects (trails, bridges, campgrounds, etc.) that create or enhance outdoors access.
Funding for this round of projects comes from the American Rescue Plan Act, which carries firm timelines for any funds to be obligated and spent. The Council seeks projects that can be under contract by the end of 2024 and completed before the end of 2026.
“This represents a great, potential opportunity for those who have shovel-ready projects, or ones that are close to it, to build facilities that create new access to the outdoors,” said Susan Buxton, director of the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation and an ORFAC council member. “We want proposals that can be done quickly and give the recreating public something new opportunities.”

Payette Lake parcels net state $6 million
Star-News, 8-29-24
AnnMarie and Zeke Johnson were relieved last week when the Waters Edge Event Center in Eagle grew quiet after they placed an opening bid on a Payette Lake cabin site the couple has been leasing from the state.
The Boise couple’s bid was the only one placed for the cottage site at 993 Grouse Way, one of two lots that did not receive more than one bid during last Friday’s auction by the Idaho Department of Lands.
“We didn’t know what to expect, but there were way more people at the auction than we thought,” Johnson said. “We were the only bidder (for the lot), which was kind of a surprise.”
The $473,000 the couple paid for the lot at 993 Grouse Way contributed to $6 million raised during the auction, which offered six lots with cabins for sale around Payette Lake, including one lakefront lot.

Precipitation moderates fire activity on Chimney Fire
Daily Update – Thursday, September 12, 2024
Acres: 6,475
Start Date: 9/2/2024
Location: 9 miles northwest of Fairfield, ID
Personnel: 457
Containment: 10%
Fuels: Timber, brush, grass, understory
Highlights: Community meeting will be held tonight at 6 pm at the Camas County Senior and Community Center at 129 Willow Avenue in Fairfield, Idaho.
Operations: Firefighters added containment on the southern perimeter to keep the fire from moving across the Lime Creek drainage and to protect values at risk. A reconnaissance flight detected a spot fire on the northern section of the fire that grew to 40 acres by the afternoon. Fire growth is pushing northeast towards a significant natural feature, Rock Ridge, that could help to hold the fire. Crews scouted access roads and planned for future work along the eastern and western flanks. Today’s activities will be weather dependent; if the roads are passable and safe for crews to continue scouting routes, cleanup work will continue on the proposed bulldozer line. With anticipated high relative humidity at a minimum of 53, minimal fire activity expected today. Heat is expected to remain in heavy dead and down timber, despite the expected weather pattern.
