Idaho City, Idaho: The west portion of the Flat Fire remains contained, protecting the community of Pioneerville where crews continue to mop up and secure fireline. The most active part of the fire is to the southeast portion where it is burning in timber, grass, and understory. The use of aircraft to drop water on that portion of the fire continues today to prevent fire growth toward the Idaho City municipal watershed. The fire has had some initial impacts on waterways. Assigned resources include 10 hand crews, multiple engines, heavy equipment and aircraft.
Weather Concerns: Projected high winds this afternoon may increase fire behavior towards the east, possibly pushing the fire to the watershed and old Pioneer Fire scar where there are more opportunities for fire containment. Air is smokey in Idaho City.
Flat Fire Community Meeting: The meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. Monday, August 19 at the Ray Robison Community Hall in Idaho City. Fire personnel will provide the latest on Flat Fire activity.
Closures: The Summit Flat Road (#380) between Pioneerville and Coulter Summit is closed for public and firefighter safety.
Fire Background: The Flat Fire is located about 1 mile northeast of Pioneerville in Boise County. The fire started August 5 after a thunderstorm. The fire continues to move east, away from the community of Pioneerville. Fire behavior is short crown runs, group torching and running. This is a full suppression strategy fire. The North Idaho Gold Team assumed command at 6:00 a.m. Friday, August 16, with the Idaho Department of Lands the lead agency on the incident.
