Cherry Fire reaches full containment

(Riggins, Idaho)- In the steep and rugged country of north central Idaho, fire crews have successfully contained both the Cherry and Steelhead fires north of Riggins, Idaho. These fires, both a result of the lightning storm that moved through the area on July 23 & 24 2024, were caught and contained through a combination of fast local response and resources that came from all over the country to support the efforts as the fires moved past initial response.

The dedicated hard work in very arduous conditions proved successful, and the firefighters we able to minimize the impact of the fires. There were no structures involved in either fire.

The final acreage for the Steelhead Fire is 59 acres, and 53 acres for the Cherry Fire.

Today, crews will patrol the Steelhead Fire perimeter. Reinforcement of control lines through mop up operations continues for the Cherry Fire. Command of both fires will transfer back to the local Idaho Department of Lands fire protective district tomorrow.
