Stealhead & Cherry Fires
(Riggins, ID) Following the lightning storm on July 23rd, multiple fires were started throughout the Grangeville dispatch zone. The Stealhead and Cherry Fires, both full suppression fires on Idaho Endowment Lands, are being coordinated by an Idaho Department of Lands Type 3 Incident Management Team.
The Stealhead Fire started 7/24/ 2024 and is approximately 11.8 mile north of Riggins, Idaho. The Cherry Fire was reported 7/25/ 2024 and is 3 miles northeast of Riggins. Both fires are in very
rugged and steep terrain making direct ground firefighting actions challenging.
Firefighters have been tirelessly working to catch both fires. Ground forces were able to access the Stealhead Fire directly off Highway 95 and began safely and aggressively constructing direct and indirect control line supported with water drops from aviation resources. Fireline around the fire perimeter is complete and mop up towards the interior continues today. The fire is estimated at 70 acres.
Smokejumpers from Grangeville and McCall were able to gain access early on to the Cherry Fire. However, very few roads exist in this rugged area and drive times for engines are well over and hour and a half from Riggins, Idaho. Crews have successfully held the fire to approximately 60 acres on state lands.
Overnight, substantial wetting rains have reduced fire behavior on the Cherry Fire to minimal levels with creeping and smoking through heavy dead and down fuels. Today, crews will continue to
reinforce the progress made over the past several days toward containment.
Fire managers would like to thank the many county, state, and federal cooperators and partners who are assisting these efforts.
