Field Reports: Part of popular road in North Idaho to close
Spokesman-Review, 5-23-24
From staff reports
A road popular with campers and other recreationists in North Idaho will close for about a month next week.
The Idaho Department of Lands announced Wednesday that about 9 miles of the Aquarius Road between Floodwood Road and Grandad Bridge near Elk River, Idaho, will close.
The closure, which begins Tuesday, will allow crews to rebuild the road and build a 10-foot wall that’s meant to keep the road from failing and make travel safer.
The Department of Lands said in a news release that the project should be finished and the road reopened by early July.
An alternate route to reach Grandad Bridge is possible by going through Elk River and using the Elk River Aquarius Road, also known as Diamond Road.

Local land management downplays wildlife needs
Bonner County Daily Bee, 5-17-24
Local approaches to federal land management downplay wildlife needs and emphasize recreation and logging concerns.
A closed-door meeting in Sandpoint, involving lawmakers, the U.S. Forest Service, the Idaho Department of Lands, timber companies, and a token conservation group, aims to craft a wilderness agreement. It is not their right to exclude the public during negotiations. Unacceptable concessions will be made for timber interests, for legislation keeping Upper Pack River open to snowmobiles and allowing mountain bikes in new wilderness and grizzly habitat, while ignoring violations to grizzly core habitat in the Myrtle Bear Unit.

Kamiah Fire Rescue Quickly Controls Wildfire with New Volunteers and Equipment
Big Country News, 5-18-24
KAMIAH - Last Wednesday, May 15th, 2024, Kamiah Fire Rescue (KFR) responded to a 1.5-acre wildfire on Paradise Drive, just northeast of Kamiah. Teaming up with the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL), KFR deployed a progressive hose lay strategy, encircling the blaze and preventing its spread.
Assisted by several new KFR volunteers, the team showcased the effectiveness of their newest fire engine, E23, acquired at no cost. After 3 hours putting out the fire the crew was back in service for the next fire. All the hose packs used were washed and refolded in the green wildland packs as seen in the provided photos.
Fire Chief Billy praised the team's dedication on social media, "I am so proud of the team of dedicated, hard working individuals that put everything aside with the sole focus of serving the citizens of Kamiah."

Groups say BLM proposed rule is not legal
Tri-State Livestock News, 4-20-24
The Bureau of Land Management revealed a final rule on April 18, which, among other changes, allows the approval of “restoration and mitigation” leases.
Many federal land users are concerned about the possibility of this decision taking away grazing rights, timber rights and mineral rights for current users.
The final rule clarifies and refines concepts first proposed in April 2023. The BLM provided a 90-day comment period on this rule, holding five public meetings and receiving over 200,000 comments, the vast majority of which supported the effort. In response to the substantive comments received, the BLM clarified and refined concepts laid out in the proposed rule.
