Why the Steamboat Gulch Tubing Hill is closed
Boise State Radio/Idaho Matters, 1-25-24
With all the recent snow, folks in southwest Idaho have been on the lookout for safe spots to take their kids tubing.
In the past, Steamboat Gulch Tubing Hill near Idaho City has been a favorite recreation spot, providing hours of winter fun an hour from Boise.
But the hill is closed after the former operator stepped down, and the Idaho Department of Lands is looking for someone else to keep the tubes sliding.
Robbie Johnson, a public information officer with the Idaho Department of Lands, joined Idaho Matters to talk more.

Snowmobilers will see new kiosks on state land in North Idaho
The Spokesman-Review, 1-24-24
Snowmobilers in North Idaho may have noticed some new signage this winter.
The Idaho Department of Lands has installed three new kiosks for its trails on endowment lands in Boundary County.
The kiosks, placed in the Fall Creek and Ruby Creek areas, provide space for the agency to post updates and include QR codes that allow users to pull up digital maps that provide current information on area closures and other items.
Todd Wernex, the recreation manager for the Department of Lands, said the kiosks are the first to be used for winter recreation in Idaho. Similar kiosks exist on trails used primarily in the summer season.
He said they’re meant to make it easier for riders to know the rules and help preserve endowment lands, which the state uses to generate revenue for public schools.

IDL working to prevent damages to land caused by snowmobiles
KREM2, 1-23-24
BOISE, Idaho — Damage to trees, fences and gates is pushing the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) to collaborate with snowmobilers on keeping the recreation open.
“Accidental or careless activities such as running over young trees emerging out of the snow can stunt tree growth,” said Todd Wernex, IDL Recreation Program Manager. “Trees provide product for the forest industry and help fund Idaho’s public schools.”
When snowmobilers register their Over Snow Vehicle, one dollar from each OSV tag now goes to IDL to provide snowmobile opportunities and to repair impacts directly related to snowmobile use on Idaho land.
IDL is partnering with Idaho parks and Recreation, counties and private landowners to maintain this access.

Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) is actively working to keep this beloved recreation open by collaborating with snowmobilers.
