Gooding County officials declare local disaster emergency
KTVB, October 5, 2023
GOODING COUNTY, Idaho — Gooding County has formally declared a local disaster emergency due to the quagga mussel invasion occurring in the Snake River.
On Monday, the Gooding County Board of County Commissioners declared an Invasive Quagga Mussel Emergency based on the Snake River conditions and the severity of the invasive species.
In a news release, county officials have closed public river access to people and pets until further notice - as Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) treats the river in an effort to eradicate the invasive mussel.
While closures are in place, kayaking, boating, fishing, swimming and all other water activity is off limits.

Idaho Dept. of Ag implements aggressive defense against quagga mussels
Idaho Press, 10-4-23
It might not be the scientific and odds-defying equivalent of NASA landing the Perseverance rover on the surface of Mars in February 2021, but a recent discovery by Idaho Department of Agriculture researchers was no small feat.
Not long after quagga mussel larvae were discovered in the Snake River in the Twin Falls area, state Department of Agriculture staffers started physically inspecting a 2-mile stretch of river where routine water sampling had confirmed microscopic veligers (larvae).
As part of that inspection, two staffers, Jeremey Varley, the section manager for the department’s Plants Division, and a female employee dove into the river in an area where the “plume” of veligers was more pronounced, and found a single adult quagga mussel — a shellfish the size of a fingernail — on a rock in 16 feet of water.
Despite cooler weather, human-caused wildfires remain a concern in Idaho: Here's how to prevent them
KLEW, 10-3-23
LEWISTON, Idaho - Now that the weather is cooling down, our region is now in moderate or low fire danger risk. However, wildfires can still happen at any time.
“Wildfires can occur anytime there is dry fuels and spark, or some sort of ignition,” Idaho Department of Lands Policy and Communications Chief Scott Phillips said.
Nationally around 80% of wildfires are caused by humans.
The biggest cause of those fires is due to campfires being left unattended.
This year there have been around 300 fires that have burned over 2,000 acres.
“A lot of these fires were human caused were still calculating the exact percentage because we are still investigating a number of the fires started this year,” Scott Phillips said.
