Evacuations Lifted, Crews Begin Mopping Up Parkway Fire

Post Falls, Idaho – Early morning rain brought relief to crews battling the 80-acre Parkway Fire. The fire was discovered on Friday, burning in a steep, heavily timbered area above the Spokane River, near the dam at Post Falls. Favorable weather coupled with a successful effort to surround the fire’s perimeter with fireline resulted in officials rescinding evacuations in the area.

News of the evacuations and road closures being lifted was released by Kootenai County Fire & Rescue this morning.

Due to the combined effort of state and local firefighters, no structures were damaged or lost.

According to Nate Rogers, the Idaho Department of Lands Type 3 Team incident commander in charge of the fire, today’s objectives include:

Keeping firefighters and members of the public safe
Minimizing the acreage burned and protecting structures and timber assets
Holding the fire north of Riverview Drive, west of structures in the area and south of the Spokane River
Beginning mop up activities along a swath 100 feet wide around the perimeter of the fire

Crews will also continue laying hose around the perimeter to facilitate mopping up.

With active fire suppression operations continuing in the area, portions of W. Riverview Drive will be limited to one lane. Officials urge caution while driving in the area because fire equipment using the road moves slowly and stops frequently. Please limit the use of Riverview Drive to local traffic only.

· Secure trailer chains so they don’t drag and cause a fire

· Never park over dry grass because hot exhaust systems can start a fire
