2022 Annual Accident and Injury Report
Each year, the Safety Officer reviews all workplace accident and injury reports and near misses. This information is gathered from workers' comp claims, near miss reports, and vehicle accidents reported to Risk Management. All of this information is consolidated into the Annual Accident and Injury Report.
The purpose is to identify trends, recommend mitigation solutions such as PPE needs, and develop safety messages and micro learning sessions based on the findings.
Historically, the report has been presented only to the Safety Committee and Executive Team. This year it was sent to all employees through the Safety News Letter as it will provide awareness to trends and other safety issues across all offices.
IDL Fire Investigators Seek Help Identifying the Cause of the Kidd Island Fire
Because Independence Day sparked more than national pride at Kidd Island this year, in a July 6 news release IDL fire investigators asked the public to help identify the cause of a fire. IDL also reached out on social media asking for help.
ATV Training in Clearwater Area
As Keith Brink, Resource Supervisor for the Clearwater Area, was arranging for ATV/UTV training for the summer seasonals in his area, he discovered many of the permanent staff had not had training in some time.
He arranged for Ethan Mahakam from Idaho Parks and Recreation to provide the training, teaching two seperate three-hour sessions on proper transportation and driving techniques over different course layouts
The training was very informative and was well received by more than 25 permanent and seasonal employees. It went so well the decision was made to implement this class each summer, especially for new seasonal help as they often operate the machines. This class was especially beneficial for employees who had never been exposed to ATVs and UTVs.
A special thanks to Parks and Recreation who provided the training at no cost!
IDL Launches New Online Wildfire Report
This week IDL upgraded it's popular online Fire News Feed to include near real time reporting about wildfire activity on the land we protect.
IRWIN, the nationwide Integrated Reporting of Wildland-Fire Information system, provides the data that drives this new dashboard. Idaho's dispatch centers update IRWIN with incident information as it is available.
IDL's new wildfire report is also displayed on digital signage at select offices.

Governor Declared July 2 Idaho Wildland Firefighter Day, IDL Participates in National Wildland Firefighter Day at NIFC
Governor Little proclaimed July 2 as Idaho Wildland Firefighter Day. The proclamation recognized the highly dangerous work Idaho wildland firefighters accomplish in the protection of the more than 9 million acres of private, state and federal land.
On June 27 IDL joined agencies from across the nation at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise to honor and remember wildland firefighters. IDL's Southwest Supervisory Area sent an engine to the the National Wildland Firefighters Day celebration, along with a crew of firefighters from the area. Idaho Transportation, Lands Officials Look to the Past to Help Prevent Roadside Wildfires in the Future
In preparation for the last holiday weekend, IDL and the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) collaborated on a joint news release designed to help prevent roadside wildfires. The agencies urged Idahoans and Gem State visitors to make sure the safety chains attached to their trailers won’t drag and spark fires, and that tires are road worthy so they don’t blow out.
The collaborative release reminded readers that those who start a fire and are found negligent could be on the hook for covering suppression costs and economic damages.
The story also highlighted several cases where blown tires, dragging chains, or a vehicles parked over dry fuels started wildfires. One example recounted how in 1992 a negligent motorist drove for miles with a flat tire on the car he was towing behind his motorhome. The driver's negligence started a 6,258 acre fire along Highway 55 near Banks, ID, that resulted in a $1.3 million bill for the cost of fighting the blaze.
IDL anticipates launching additional joint news releases with ITD later this summer.
Director Miller Joins Cattlemen at Annual Summer Meeting
Late month Director Miller and Addie Faust represented IDL at the Idaho Cattle Association's annual summer meeting. Senate Bill 1049 and rulemaking underway to implement this new law that helps protect endowment land from recreational damage was a hot topic.
IDL's grazing lessees have long expressed frustration when recreationists on endowment land fail to close gates. The new law, coupled with rulemaking, provide IDL with tools to curb such damaging behaviors and to educate the public about recreating responsibly on endowment land.
Other topics of discussion at the event included the University of Idaho's sage grouse and grazing study, virtual livestock fencing and, no pun intended, efforts underway at the Idaho State Department of Agriculture to rebrand its range program.
