Priest Lake Elementary students honored for posters
Bonner County Daily Bee, 6-7-23
Smokey Bear stopped in to say hello to Priest Lake Elementary students in late May — and celebrate the school's participation in a pair of local poster contests.
Smokey and his helpers — firefighters from the U.S. Forest Service and the Idaho Department of Lands — presented campfire safety information to the students and poster contest winners received certificates and prizes.
U.S. Forest Service and Priest Lake Idaho Department of Lands partnered with Moscow Chapter of the Idaho Garden Clubs with a yearly Smokey/Woodsy poster contest and certificates with prizes being awarded to the winners.
A big winner this year is Addy Brown of Priest Lake Elementary who won the local competition, first place in the Idaho competition, and second place in the Pacific Region, which includes Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada, and Arizona.
Posters were judged for four elementary schools in western Bonner County in November. Prizes and the contest are sponsored by the Moscow Chapter of the Garden Clubs, the Idaho Department of Lands, the USFS, and the Bonner County Fire Prevention Co-op.

You can drastically alter our wildfire risk
Idaho State Journal, 6-6-23
We know the Smokey Bear saying by heart: Only you can prevent forest fires. But every year, nationally, around 80% of wildfires are caused by humans. That jumps to more than 90% of fires when you look at what the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) has responded to this year. It could be a thrown cigarette, a debris burning pile not carefully watched, a campfire left burning, dragging chains, or parking on dry grass. The list goes on.
There is no room for mistakes when looking to protect our communities and our natural resources from wildfire. The significant precipitation that we received this winter and spring has resulted in a lot of fine fuel growth, and as temperatures rise those fuels dry which increases the risk of wildfire.
The reminders to prevent wildfires are hard to miss, be it from IDL or our partner agencies. Among them: Make sure your fire is dead out. Don’t drag chains or drive vehicles on dry grass. Be careful when target shooting. Don’t use illegal fireworks. There are too many reminders to include here.

Using social media to keep Idaho's public lands beautiful
BSU Public Radio, 6-5-23
Maybe you've seen pictures or maybe you've seen it in person: trash littering your favorite campsite, old junk dumped along your hiking trail, beautiful public lands trashed and left a mess.
Sometimes it's deliberate, but often it's simply ignorance and a lack of understanding of what to do or not to do on public lands.
The "Recreating Responsibly Idaho" program is hoping to fix at least part of the problem. Robbie Johnson, Senior Public Information Officer with the Idaho Department of Lands and Idaho outdoor author Steve Stuebner, who has worked on the Recreating Responsibly campaign joined Idaho Matters to talk more about this issue.
