The Big 40th Annual Idaho State Forestry Contest is Thursday
Turnout expected to double
(Athol, Idaho) Who can measure logs with the most accuracy, be the best tree doctor, or consistently determine the board foot volume of a standing tree? Find out Thursday, May 11, 2023, as students gather at the 40th Annual Idaho State Forestry Contest at Farragut State Park in North Idaho. About 350 students, 95 coaches/chaperones and 150+ volunteers are planning to participate.

The contest is for students in grades 5 through 12 to compete for scholarships and cash prizes in basic forestry and resource management. The contest is typically held the second Thursday in May and is sponsored by the Idaho Department of Lands, Bonner Soil and Water Conservation District and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and hosted by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.
For the Big 40: There will be special recognition of contest chairs covering the last four decades, as well as an expanded job fair. Many of Idaho’s leaders in forestry have competed in this event over the years, as the contest can be a steppingstone to a career that generates revenue for the state.
“The Idaho State Forestry Contest helps Idaho students learn the skills to grow and harvest timber like we do at the Idaho Department of Lands, where we manage forests to generate funding for Idaho public schools,” said Idaho Department of Lands Director Dustin Miller. “Roughly 30 percent of the timber harvested in Idaho comes from these lands each year. This will continue as we grow more and more trees, but we can’t do that without these future foresters.”
The media is invited to gather video and images of students at various stations throughout the competition, conduct interviews, and cover the awards presentation.

Note: A cash-only entrance fee of $7 (in state) or $14 (out of state) is required
