The Benewah County Commissioners are pursuing a land exchange with the Idaho Department of Lands.

County commissioners met with a representative from the Idaho Land Board last month to go over the timeline, Feb. 13. No action was taken.

“What we did was we just looked at the road map of how to go about doing it,” Commissioner Phil Lampert said. “There are several steps.”

Commissioners are looking at trading some timberland within the county for a parcel IDL owns near the Santa Y, which includes the horse arena and a rock pit. Nothing official has been finalized yet.

Next steps include title search, appraisals and approval from both entities once details are finalized. Lampert said the item will likely be considered by the Idaho Land Board at their meeting later this month, March 21. He added Commissioner Bob Short has done a lot of the work, which began a year or so ago.

“IDL wants to fast track it, and hopefully get it done by November,” Lampert said, “or before the end of year anyway. It has to be value for value. The county does have a rock pit there that it uses and it is also where the UpRiver Saddle Club arena is, which the lease is coming up on that. The county acquiring it would secure the indefinite future for both venues… it’d be a good thing.”
